Mi ero recato per qualche giorno, per rinfrancare lo spirito, nelle montagne del Südtirol. Il mio amico Peter, abilissimo scultore e intagliatore del legno, mi aveva trovato un alloggio vicino alla sua casetta-laboratorio. Mentre Peter lavorava ai suoi straordinari manufatti, facevo lunghe passeggiate per i sentieri e per i boschi. Giunsi persino in un luogo di una bellezza eccezionale, a quasi duemila metri di altezza, dove si trovavano alcuni “uomini di pietra”, dei blocchi di massi posti uno sopra l’altro dall’aspetto di umanoidi che, secondo una leggenda, in alcune particolari notti dell’anno, si animerebbero vagando per le montagne. Peter mi aveva anche fatto conoscere un anziano artigiano, intagliatore di legno e di metallo, l’ultimo costruttore nella vallata di una particolare pipa, tipica del luogo. Restai estasiato dalla bellezza dell’oggetto, una delle ultime testimonianze di un’arte che stava sparendo, inghiottita dalla produzione industriale e seriale.
Un paio di giorni dopo il mio arrivo, Peter mi disse che in un pascolo di alta quota, vicino al sito degli “uomini di pietra”, le mucche si erano messe di traverso sul sentiero e non volevano più far passare nessuno. Addirittura, inseguivano gli escursionisti che cercavano di passare e i buoi minacciavano di prenderli a cornate. Mi recai anch’io fin lassù e verificai di persona: veramente, non c’era proprio verso di passare, le mucche sembravano impazzite, muggivano in continuazione e inseguivano i camminatori. Non si poteva fare altro che ridiscendere a valle: era come se quegli animali avessero avuto improvvisamente coscienza che quel territorio era il loro e l’uomo veniva sentito come un elemento estraneo, un inquinatore e un devastatore. Beh, non avevano proprio tutti i torti: mentre camminavo alla volta degli “uomini di pietra”, in alta montagna, avevo visto diverse cartacce sul sentiero, fazzoletti, perfino cicche di sigarette. Me ne tornai giù, in paese e mi recai in un bar tavola calda. Il menù era pieno di errori di italiano: “prezzelmolo”, “cotoleta alla millanese” (così era inopinatamente tradotta la parola “Wienerschnitzel, come se si trattasse della stessa cosa) e via di seguito. Possibile che siano sviste? D’altra parte sono così precisi in Südtirol! Forse era un rifiuto della lingua italiana tout court….
Insomma, arrivò Peter e mi fece improvvisamente uscire dai miei futili pensieri: mi disse infatti che le mucche erano vittime di un virus che proveniva dalla pianura, un’aria malsana che le rendeva matte e folli e che giungeva dagli allevamenti intensivi e dai campi coltivati con diserbanti chimici. Se in montagna, infatti, le mucche e gli altri animali erano liberi, bastava scendere giù per trovare pollai e allevamenti in cui galline, maiali e mucche erano ammassati in modo crudele e selvaggio. Tutti quei poveri animali andavano a far incentivare il consumo di carne anche qui in alta montagna, quelle “cotolete alla millanese” che avevo visto sui menu. Soffrivano ed erano folli quelle povere mucche, soffrivano sentendo la sofferenza delle altre loro simili destinate al macello.
“Caro Peter” – dissi – penso che allora sarà un problema irrisolvibile perché non si possono eliminare da un giorno all’altro gli allevamenti intensivi e le coltivazioni tossiche, tanto più che laggiù in pianura stanno ancora distruggendo boschi e prati selvatici per costruire nuovi siti di allevamenti e nuovi resort: ho visto le ruspe lavorare incessantemente mentre venivo su da te. “Sta’ tranqvillo, caro Guy” – rispose Peter – “in poko tempo i nostri feterinari skoprirano faccino per mukke! Il virus di Mukka Matta sarà skonfito!” Cavolo! Avevano già dato il nome a questo fantomatico virus, “Mucca Matta” (sulla falsariga, forse, della famigerata “Mucca Pazza”) e stavano già preparando un vaccino! Però, nei giorni successivi, la situazione non era migliorata e i veterinari brancolavano nel buio. Il problema, però, a mio avviso, andava risolto a monte o, meglio, a valle: eliminare gli allevamenti tossici e la distruzione dell’ecosistema che stava andando avanti incessantemente. Anche se le mucche staranno meglio, in poco tempo la situazione potrebbe peggiorare di nuovo e saremo punto e daccapo.
Però, come si suol dire, le leggende hanno un fondo di verità e così, per questa volta, la situazione venne salvata proprio dalla leggenda. Certo, quella degli umanoidi di pietra, vi ricordate? Si diceva che in alcune notti dell’anno essi prendessero vita e se ne andassero in giro per le montagne. Beh, quella doveva essere la volta buona, quando le esalazioni dello sviluppo selvaggio che si consumava in pianura giunsero fino alle mucche e ai pascoli di montagna. Quell’aria marcia di pianura stava facendo marcire anche l’aria pulita delle alte vette. E giunse anche agli “uomini di pietra”. Che si incazzarono alla grande. Una notte si mossero quindi dal loro sito e si diressero verso gli allevamenti intensivi e verso i cantieri di pianura. Con le loro mani e braccia di pietra colpirono le ruspe e le distrussero; abbatterono i recinti dei pollai e degli allevamenti e portarono con sé, in alta montagna, tutti quei poveri animali che vi erano rinchiusi. Come i magici “benandanti” friulani raccontati da Carlo Ginzburg, una specie di stregoni che secondo le dicerie popolari lottavano con il demonio, così gli “uomini di pietra” südtirolesi lottarono contro il demoniaco capitalismo delle nocività e delle deforestazioni. Per ogni albero abbattuto, per ogni animale ammassato, un colpo di pietra.
Ci sono alcuni malgari che raccontano di averla vista, quella processione notturna: gli “uomini di pietra” davanti e tutti gli animali dietro. Che si dispersero per i monti e trovarono una vita migliore. Per quella volta non ci fu bisogno né di veterinari né di vaccini. Però le devastazioni dell’ecosistema sono sempre in agguato e i signori delle ruspe e delle nocività ci avrebbero messo poco per riprendersi. Coraggio, umanoidi di pietra, ci sarà ancora bisogno di voi e della vostra leggenda.

Kraa The Sea Monster (1998) is what happens when Godzilla’s sleazy cousin crawls from a Jersey swamp in a rubber suit that reeks like a stale Domino’s pizza box.
This was Full Moon’s grand attempt to ride the coattails of Godzilla ’98, and they don’t even try to hide it. There’s literally a Godzilla billboard in one of the destruction shots, like the movie itself is sighing, “Yeah, you probably should’ve watched that other garbage instead of this garbage.”
The setup is threadbare: Lord Doom—Doctor Doom’s knockoff brother from a Halloween clearance bin—sends Kraa to stomp Earth into submission. Planet Patrol, a team of photogenic twenty-somethings squeezed into lycra on what looks like a rejected Death Star set, can’t make it to the fight.
So the job falls to a biker, a waitress, and, best of all, a clam-shaped alien puppet who talks like he’s auditioning for Super Mario Bros. Supposed to land in Italy, he crashes in New Jersey instead, so of course he speaks in a cartoon Italian accent.
And the monster? Kraa ambles through miniatures like he’s shopping for groceries. Sometimes you’ll catch timecode still burned into the frame, or a green screen that never got finished. The rubber suit itself was later sold off to collectors—proof that someone out there paid actual money to own a piece of Full Moon’s sweat-soaked kaiju history.
Planet Patrol could’ve been the saving grace. They’re pretty, they’re in lycra, and they radiate late-night-TV charisma. But they barely show up, leaving us stuck with Earthlings nobody cares about. Worse still, when the monster footage arrives, it’s so bland you almost miss the biker and waitress. Almost.
Here’s the problem: Kraa! isn’t gloriously inept like Plan 9 from Outer Space, and it isn’t stylishly wild like Starcrash. It’s self-aware bad. It winks at you. And nothing kills camp faster than a movie begging to be in on the joke. It’s the cinematic equivalent of the kid in high school rehearsing comebacks in the mirror, never realizing that trying too hard is the least cool move of all.
In the end, Kraa! The Sea Monster is a kaiju flick without menace, a parody without guts, and a spoof without bite. Watch it if you’re curious, but don’t expect “so bad it’s good.” This one’s “so bad it’s boring”—and boring is the monster no one can beat.

The Irish ambassador to Germany has conveyed her concern to German authorities after an Irish demonstrator was assaulted by police officers during a pro-Palestine protest in Berlin.
Videos posted on social media showed Kitty O'Brien being struck twice in the face by a German officer and subsequently dragged away from the demonstration in support of #Palestine on Rosenthaler Street in the German capital on Thursday.
