There is certainly an AI bubble, and it's part of a bigger US tech bubble that will soon burst. A third of the value of the S&P 500 is in just 7 tech companies (Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Tesla).
But this in turn is an expression of a much, much bigger problem: there's just too much money looking for returns. All over the world, and for various reasons, people with disposable income are saving far too much - but in most developed countries the biggest reasons are demographic change, too low taxation, the privatisation of state pensions and other welfare safety nets, resource depletion, market saturation and increasing resistance to consumerism and therefore growth.
It's pernicious. We have too much money to invest just at the time we have no decent investments. Fund managers all over the world simply can't get sufficient returns - they MUST create financial bubbles. If it wasn't US tech stocks it would be something else..
Government action could help - using tax and state savings schemes to redirect money into long-term sustainable investments - these have to be in the public sector because the returns will be over very long periods - decades, centuries - and therefore beyond any market logic. Other than this, I see no solution to the underlying financial imbalance other than letting it crash - or rather leaving it to a series of crashes.
