I am an artist, listener, and run a label. I voted for the first. As an artist and for my label, all the work is done and paid for when pre-orders start, that period is more about drumming up interest and the money from pre-orders can either help fund additional promo for the release, or for the label, its cut can go towards the next release.
I can only imaging waiting till release day being useful if you are doing it kickstarter style?

🇺🇸 The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a semi-aquatic rodent native to North America but now also widespread in wetlands across Europe. It measures around 40 to 60 centimeters in length including the tail and weighs between 1 and 2 kilograms. Muskrats are excellent swimmers, using their flattened tails and webbed hind feet to navigate through water. They build dome-shaped lodges out of vegetation near the edges of ponds and rivers. Active mostly at dusk and night, muskrats feed on aquatic plants, roots, and sometimes small aquatic animals. Despite being shy and often hidden, they play an important role in wetland ecosystems by helping to shape the landscape through their digging and feeding habits.
