It's official: U.S. economic supremacy is history. 2025 is the year when China becomes the first world power. Now, I wouldn't want to live in China due to several reasons (lack of freedom of expression, weak cultural landscape, few urban green spaces, lousy urbanism, vertical construction), but the Chinese dream is becoming way more seductive than the American dream. And Trump is definitely not helping. Which is a pity, because I really think that the U.S. left the world an absolutely incredible cultural, scientific, and technological legacy...

Why did China have so many quality goods that we did not? Why hadn’t such obvious quality of life improvements traversed the Pacific? We bounced around theories. I still don’t know what the answer is, except that we came up with ideas for new import-export schemes roughly three times a day.
Infrastructure, too, might be viewed as consumer surplus. Overcapacity might squeeze EV companies, but it also means buying a new BYD car for less than $10k USD. High-speed rail and clean public restrooms and well-maintained parks all contributed to a sense of ease. In the US, blue state residents pay high taxes without really feeling what the government provides. In China, these daily niceties can’t be ignored. Without other basic freedoms, safety and convenience form the pillars of state legitimacy."

I think the bug I resolved (I wouldn't say fixed) in @novelwriter today is the weirdest I've encountered so far.
The app uses @-based keywords to set meta data in the text. An auto-complete menu pops up to suggest which keyword when you type an @ on a new line.
In the current version (at least) if you have the editor "justified margins" set, type an @, then type backspace, then *and only then* will Qt/PyQt segfault and crash the app.
If I close the menu before forwarding the key press, the bug goes away, so I'm fairly certain the event handling and something related to processing signals in the event queue triggers some corner case where Qt tries to access some reference after it's destroyed.
What is so puzzling is why it only happens on an @ character and only if the text has justified margins! 😅
