They decided to allow Google, Twitter, and Reddit accounts, using their modified copy of Mastodon. I joined the Fedi to escape corporate social media, not join it all over again.

in reply to Jeff Atwood • • •I think you're missing the obvious: the information is no longer free if it's shoved behind a paywall and it requires a few hundred households' worth of electricity to train and infer, not to mention to damage and theft of natural resources required to execute that query.
It's "Free" in the sense that these systems are training on it all and letting the site operators shoulder the expense for bandwidth and entire regions try to cope with the sudden water demand.
It's free in the same way sitting in the non-smoking section was "smoke-free".
What happens when SO disappears from online use because it's not profitable, and this CC-licensed knowledge is then only available via LLM? Is that still free?
It's such an awful take that means well but fails to conceive everything through to its logical conclusion.

Why would we, when you are clearly not engaging in honest converesation?
If I were you, I'd reveal the costs involved in AI usage and prove that its reasonable instead of deflecting and redirecting the conversation towards something else

Also, doesn’t that kind of imply an LLM trained on SO can *only* be trained on SO, as if it’s also trained on a million other sources, then any output would need to provide 1,000,001 attributions?
