I also use the opportunity to share a previously unaired photo I've taken during the month, and write a little about it. This was the shot I used in today's bonus post.
If you'd like to become a patron, you'd be very welcome! Patrons receive three exclusive travel-related posts each week, and the higher tiers receive more. Details here: patreon.com/timrichards

Part 2 of my series exposing the contradictions in "child protection" laws. While lawmakers claim to protect kids online, they've created a system where minors can take on crushing debt but can't join digital communities without adult permission. The hypocrisy runs deeper than most people realize.

An independent government agency in Japan declared four cities as "hometowns" of four African countries. Here's how Japan's far right jumped on bad reporting from Africa, leading to protestors in Japan shouting that they didn't want to see their cities "turn Black."
Way before Jan 6, when a Trump speech was followed by his fans storming the capitol, there was the PBA riot, when a Giuliani speech was followed by NYPD cops storming NY City Hall, calling Dinkins, the city's 1st Black mayor, the n-word, and threatening him with harm.
Giuliani won the next election.
time.com/6257682/rudy-giuliani…
Why were the cops so mad at Dinkins?
Well, NYPD were beating and killing a lot of people, mostly Black and brown. The board responsible for police oversight was ineffective, as it was half cops and half civilians. That's like the "Chicken Safety Oversight Board" being half chickens and half foxes.🤡
After a Dominican man was killed, mayor Dinkins committed two unforgivable sins:
1) He met with the victim's family, and invited them to city hall.
2) He recommended that while policy boards should have both law enforcement and civilian members, the civilian oversight board should be... well... 100% civilian.
Then the Giuliani speech and city hall riot happened.
Then there was a very racist campaign for mayor, that Dinkins lost and Giuliani won.
Then Giuliani did his "broken windows" policing, resulting in significant pain to NYPD Black and brown communities.
Then he supported the Patriot Act to further "War on Drugs" poor Black folk.
Then he did the election stuff that he is still paying for.
He was never "America's mayor."

Most US people do know about Jan 6.
But they don't know about Colfax.
And don't know about the NYPD city hall riot.
Because these things aren't taught in schools, and because US white folk generally don't bother to ask why US Black folk don't like a particular politician.🤷🏿♂️

It's a crime these things are not well known.
Tulsa is like one of many that took place over the decades. I don’t know them all, but I know that they exist and one point read about some of them.

Yup.
Reminder: About 60% of US white people choose the most racist option on the ballot. About 40% of US white people will choose the *least* racist option on the ballot.
About 90% of Black folk will choose the least racist option on the ballot.
90% of Black folk plus 40% of white folk is more than 60% of white folk. So whenever everyone is allowed to vote, the US becomes less racist. ♥️👍🏿
Colfax:
In 1873 Louisiana, there was a governors election, where it was clear that the "We need less racism!" people would defeat the "We want more racism!" people. So white supremacists said, "Well then we'll just take over the government!" And so Black militia men said, "No, we will defend the democratically elected US government!" So the Black and white militia men went to defend the courthouse, and the white supremacists showed up at the courthouse Jan 6 style, armed with guns and... a cannon.
There were also a lot of unarmed Black men, women, and children there too, because they figured that with KKK and Confederate white supremacist soldiers walking around, the safest place might be at the courthouse, behind the militia made of Black and white men, and the democratically elected government. Right? Wrong.
I'll let you read the primary source document of one of the only Black survivors.

More background context:
Back then, Republicans were the white people that didn't hate Black people as much. Democrats were the KKK and Confederates. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.
🙂🙃
But Abraham Lincoln was still a self-described white supremacist.🤷🏿♂️
Lincoln called himself a "Liberal Republican." He did not want slavery, but he was vociferously against equality or voting rights for Black people. He also didn't want Black people and white people to be able to marry. And he wanted Black people permanently on the lower rung of society. Abraham Lincoln called Republicans that wanted true equality with Black people "Radical Republicans." He called Ulysses S. Grant a Radical Republican. You still hear this language echoed today, when the GOP complains about "The Radical Left."
After the war, Liberal Republicans conspired together with Democrats to use violence to limit the rights of Black people. Back then, they were called 'Fusionists.' Today they're called "Centrists." Radical Republicans and Liberal Republicans didn't like each other. Radicals thought Liberals were basically siding with the Confederates against Black people. Think Tim Walz and Ossoff vs RFK jr and Tulsi Gabbard.
The election results weren't contested in good faith. Eg, they went to a parish where Black freedmen voters greatly outnumbered white voters, and claimed that the Confederates had won in a landslide. Given that ~40% of the white voters didn't like the Confederates either, this was mathematically impossible. Their contest was basically "Stop the Steal!" logic.🤡

A good reporter and a good guy.
“Charles Bierbauer, longtime CNN correspondent and journalism dean, dies at age 83”

Back in March, we covered the story of Davis Lu, a disgruntled coder who programmed a logic bomb into his employers’ systems. His code was malicious in the extreme, designed as it was to regularly search for his Active Directory entry and fire off a series of crippling commands should it appear he had been fired. His 2019 sacking and subsequent deletion of his AD profile triggered the job, wreaking havoc on servers and causing general mayhem. Whatever satisfaction Lu drew from that must have been fleeting, because he was quickly arrested, brought to trial in federal court, and found guilty of causing intentional damage to protected computer systems.
Lu faced a decade in federal prison for the stunt, but at his sentencing last week, he got four years behind bars followed by three years of supervised release. That’s still a pretty stiff sentence, and depending on where he serves it, things might not go well for him. Uber-geek Chris Boden has some experience in the federal prison system as a result of some cryptocurrency malfeasance; his video on his time in lockup is probably something Mr. Lu should watch while he can. Honestly, we feel bad for him in a way because we’ve been there; we certainly toyed with the logic bomb idea when we were coding for a living, without actually ever doing it. Maybe he thought it would just get treated as a prank, but that was probably never in the cards; as we’re fond of telling our kids, the world just doesn’t have a sense of humor anymore.
Speaking of prison, when was the last time you had to use a floppy drive? Retrocomputer fans excepted, chances are good it’s quite a long time ago, unless you’re an inmate in the New Jersey State Prison, where USB drives are not allowed. Instead, prisoners working on appeals or continuing their education are forced to use 1.44-MB floppies to exchange data with the outside world. The New Jersey prison rules seem a bit anachronistic, since they allow a pretty generous stack of 3.5″ floppies — 20 diskettes — but disallow USB sticks. True, the USB form factor is more easily accommodated in the standard-issue prison wallet, but the materials in a stack of floppies seem like they could easily be fashioned into a shiv or shank.
We’ve said this before, but we’ve got to start hanging around a better class of dumpster. Were we to, we might get as lucky as a Redditor who reports finding a sextet of 1 TB solid-state drives in a bin. The lucky dumpster diver doesn’t say much about where they were found, perhaps wisely so, but other Redditors in the thread were quick to point out that they were probably in the trash for a reason, and that they might be a little clapped out if they came from a server array. Still, 6TB of free storage isn’t something one lightly passes up on, and even if the drives have seen better days, they’ll probably be adequate for non-critical applications. For our part, we’d love to find one of those mythical dumpsters that seem to spawn things like Selectric typewriters, supercontinuum lasers, or even all the makings of a semiconductor fab.
And finally, Brian Potter over at Construction Physics posted an excellent essay this week on the early history of the Ford Model T, the automobile that gave birth to America’s car culture, for better or for worse. Everyone seems to know the story of how Henry Ford invented the assembly line and drove the cost of a car down to around $400, making motoring accessible to the masses. And while that’s kind of true — Ford is said to have picked up the idea of moving the workpiece rather than the workers from slaughterhouses — it leaves out a lot of interesting details, which Brian picks up on. We were particularly struck by how late in the game Ford introduced assembly lines to Model T production; it wasn’t until 1913, and then only as a small-scale line to assemble the flywheel magnetos used in the ignition system. Once that line proved itself by reducing magneto assembly times by a factor of four, Ford’s process engineers began rolling out the concept across the plant. There are a ton of other tidbits in the article — enjoy!
#Linux 6.17-rc4 is now available for public testing at kernel.org and Linus Torvalds says that "last week felt pretty normal, and rc4 stats bear that out - so it all looks fairly good." Happy testing!
