I just noticed the chassis of my Thinkpad T480 bulging near the screen. this is the rear battery after I removed it! now contained in a horse trough full of dirt outside the house!
I'm fortunate that this happened while I was actively using the laptop! and also that the laptop has 2 batteries, so even without this one it is not confined to being plugged in 100% of the time.
I believe this battery is from @iFixit - gifted to me by a friend - and is the second failed battery from that order! I thought iFixIt sourced good batteries but now I'm not so sure. unknown as of yet if the battery is still under warranty.
cc @matthew - if I can scrape together the money in coming weeks I want to get a T480 keyboard and maybe a battery from you, unless it's really more cost-effective to order direct (but from who?)
I can probably help or point you to some solutions.
Batteries are tough. Difficult to know whether you are getting a good one or not, no matter the supplier. I often try to get used, tested original batteries on ebay, but I sometimes get after-market batteries, too.

in reply to Cat 🐈🥗 (D.Burch) • • •True story: back in the DOS days, I used to do PC hardware consulting, and one of our clients had a desktop box that "only worked Monday thru Thursday" - and would mysteriously be totally dead on Fridays, but work again on Monday.
We took to box back to our workbench, opened it - and it had a quarter inch of dirt and small rocks all over the motherboard. Took it out to the driveway and used the garden hose to clean it out, then let it dry in the sun. Worked fine after it dried.
Turns out they had a plant service that came in watering the plants Thursday evening - and the PC in question would get hit by the watering overflow, complete with some potting soil, which got into the case via the vents and shorted out the PC - until it dried over the weekend.
We moved the plant.
They quite literally don't make them like they used to.
