Microsoft Removed WMR Headset Support? No Problem!
In late 2024 Microsoft removed support for WMR (Windows Mixed Reality), and they didn’t just cease development. As of Windows 11 version 24H2, headsets like the HP Reverb and others by Acer, Samsung, Lenovo, and Dell stopped working at all. But the good news is developer [Matthieu Bucchianeri] created the Oasis driver for Windows Mixed Reality which allows WMR headsets (and their controllers) to work again.
Oasis is available as a free download from Steam and involves a few specific setup steps in order to get working, but once the headset and controllers are unlocked and room setup is complete, the hardware will be usable again. Note that while SteamVR is handy, one’s headset and controllers are not actually tied to SteamVR. Any VR application that uses OpenVR or OpenXR should work.
It’s an extremely well-documented project, and anyone willing to read and follow a short list of directions should be off to the races in no time.
Now that there’s a way for folks to dust off their WMR hardware and get back in the game, it’s a good time to mention that if you have ever suffered from VR sickness, we’ve covered ways to help deal with and adapt to it.

JVC TD-W10 stereo cassette deck.
Hoping this is the last deck I buy for a while. My other “great deals” from Craigslist and eBay all came with gremlins. This one was professionally serviced, which matters with tape gear. Belts, idlers, pinch rollers, and tired caps are routine failure points, so a bench check and fresh parts save you from a lot of pain later.
Why the TD-W10? It’s a mid-80s dual deck with proper tape chops: supports normal, chrome, and metal; frequency response up to ~16 kHz on metal; wow and flutter under 0.08 percent. Dolby B on this unit. In short, a competent vintage transport built for real recording and dubbing.
And yeah, I’d buy new if new were good. It isn’t. Modern “brand-new” decks like TEAC’s AD-850 spec at 0.25 percent wow and flutter and only 50–12,000 Hz on chrome and normal. That’s entry level by 90s standards. The TEAC is handy for USB and CD, but for tape fidelity it’s a step down.
So the plan is simple. Get one solid, serviced 80s deck and stop auditioning duds. Vintage mechanics plus low wow and decent Dolby beats the plasticky new stuff every time. If you’re taping mixes instead of just playing pre-recorded cassettes, a better-spec’d deck pays off fast.

Both can do this. But with a broad range of quality in the outputs, depending on the recording gear used, the skills of the operators, and the suitability of the space for recording. See the difference between NewHub and Stuff's news on TV3. With all due respect to Stuff, I've seen better production values on YT-only "news" channels.

Recording shows broadcast live from a professional radio studio results in an audio file. Recording myself reading my blog posts in my bedroom also results in an audio file. But even though these 2 things can be functionally reduced to the same kind of technical artifact, that doesn't mean listening to them creates the same experience.
If it did, I could podcasting all my blog posts and get the same half a million listener numbers as RNZ does ; )

Radio NZ are really in stupid mode.
They make a bunch of pretty dumb decisions in an effort to increase their audience share.
Those measures have the opposite effect.

Former RNZ National addict here. I hate commercial radio and waffling presenters so RNZ was my companion, at home, in the car, everywhere. For fifty years.
Morning Report led the news agenda, regularly broke stories and RNZ was the gold standard of authoritative sources.
As the media world shattered and diversified, RNZ gradually became less Kim Hill and more Jim Mora, cutting edge became the radio equivalent of squashy blancmange and I stopped listening in 2020.
Now I stream BBC Radio 4 when I need a radio fix. They're not perfect but they're less annoying than RNZ.
How could RNZ win back listeners? For a start, bring back intelligent interviews - not Wallace fucking Chapman dominating every conversation or yet more blathering from Jesse Mulligan.
In depth analysis should provide insight -- not inane "Let us know what you think" appeals to listeners.
Stop trying to compete with Mike Hosking and the anger merchants -- there is still a market for intelligent radio.
Now becoming more Auckland-centric? RNZ has misplaced its niche.

@BobLefridge @zl2tod I think they have it all wrong. Rather than centralise on Auckland they should regionalise.
Bring the YA network thing. With stations based in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. Giving local news breakouts and taking a RNZ National feed for news and other programme content.
Imagine a station where you could broadcast the "Meet The Candidates" event at the local town hall, and coverage of regional events.
Forget trying to beat the commercial stations at their own game, invent a new one by claiming back the old one.

Couldn't agree more. I said something very similar about TVNZ last year;

TV can't compete with online video, whether hosted or livestreamed, by trying to be more like it. It has to lean into the things it can do that they can't.

The sad irony of RNZ’s decision to broaden its appeal to a younger and more diverse audience is it has not only failed to attract a larger more diverse audience but in its dumbing down of content has lost a very large number of loyal listeners.
What I really don’t understand is why this was even considered an important priority considering RNZ is not a commercial broadcaster chasing ratings or advertising revenue. It may well come down to budget cuts. High quality journalism comes at a cost whereas cheap and cheerful delivers exactly what it says on the package.

The only number that declined -a bit - was (broadcast only?) live radio listening. From a lockdown-era high. It's grown again in the latest stats. But it's hovered around half a million for years.
But really how many people under 50 own an AM/FM radio receiver and listen to it regularly? Even if you include listening live via the website, or some app, how many of us listen to anything in realtime?
