You’re nudging and coaxing that little top across ramps, ledges, and drop-offs, fighting gravity, inertia, and your own twitchy joystick hand, all to plant your tip at the finish flag before the bonus counter bleeds away.
For a 16K cassette game, the presentation is shockingly ambitious. They pulled off full isometric playfields with clean tile shading and smooth slopes, and the color palette gives it a crisp toy-like feel. No background music (the machine couldn’t spare the memory), but the sound effects are enough to keep the ball rolling.
The joystick learning curve is brutal. Getting your top to obey feels like steering on ice. Stick with it and there’s fun to be had, but casual players won’t last long. And if you bought the retail tape back in ’86, you’d have been in for a nasty surprise—level 8 was literally broken, and on some stock 16K machines the game could crash at level 2. That bug earned it a reputation as much as the gameplay.
Still, as a Marble Madness clone on a system that rarely saw arcade-style polish, Pin Point is worth a spin—flawed, tough, but undeniably stylish.

Interesting to note:
Since writing this article, I've started running FreeDOS on QEMU without KVM acceleration.
And I've been booting my Pocket'386 more frequently, to run on real hardware.
It makes me want to write 2 more articles: something like “for a retro computing experience, turn off hardware acceleration” and another about the joy of running DOS on real hardware.
But I don't have much free time these days, might have to wait until October.

The outline of that article will be (basically) look at hardware speeds from 1990 .. that's solidly the "DOS" era: 386 or 486 CPU, 8 or 16 (or 32?) MB memory, 80 or 120 MB disk.
And compare that to today's speeds .. QEMU without KVM will still be way faster than 1990 hardware, but it's a closer approximation.
As much as I love the variety of packages we provide to make FreeDOS a modern DOS, it's good to remember what "DOS hardware" was really like, and why DOS had certain design decisions.
@lproven I was writing those numbers by memory, but the 486 did exist in 1990. (Introduced in April 10, 1989)
