The reluctant recognition of Palestinian statehood by Britain, France, Australia, and Canada this week is a con - it is the same switch and bait that has been blocking the creation of a Palestinian state for three decades now.
At Israel’s insistence, let us note, the Oslo accords carefully avoided any mention of the ultimate destination of this process. Nonetheless, the message from western politicians and media was the same: this was heading towards a Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel.
Looking back, it is evident why that did not happen when it still looked feasible. The Israeli leader of the time, Yitzhak Rabin, told the Israeli parliament that his vision was not of a state but of "an entity which is less than a state": a glorified Palestinian local authority utterly dependent on its bigger neighbour, Israel, for its security and economic survival.
In typical fashion, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the announcement as he pulled the rug from under his own act of recognition by dictating what kind of state Palestine would have to be. Not a sovereign one, in which the Palestinian people made their own decisions, but one that echoed Rabin’s “entity less than a state”.
Starmer insisted Hamas - Gaza’s elected government and one of Palestine’s two main political factions – could play no part in running this state. The Palestinian state would also, of course, have no military to defend itself from the genocidal state next door.A report this week in the Telegraph indicates that, even after formal recognition, Starmer is still imposing new conditions designed to hollow out his declaration.
They include: demands for new Palestinian elections - elections that can only take place with Israel’s permission, which it will not give; an overhaul of any latent Palestinian nationalism Israel objects to in the Palestinian education system, even as Israel’s own education system has long been laced with genocidal incitement; a requirement that the Palestinian Authority not compensate families of anyone Israel declares a "terrorist" - which pretty much covers any Palestinian killed or jailed by Israel.

@mastodonmigration I _think_ he's referring to the fact that KOMO is a broadcast network, which means, if you have an antenna, you can receive it without paying for any service (that's how we get our local DC-based networks at my house).
Depending on how far or close he is to their broadcast station, he might even be able to get it with an antenna built into his TV (if TVs still have antennas built in)

Receiving local stations with an antenna also does not result in any retransmission fees being paid to the local affiliate. Retransmission fees are now about half an affiliate's revenue.

Questo potrebbe essere il riassunto di quanto uscito dai confronti con Giovani Costruttrici e Costruttori di Pace, di cui sono orgogliosamente parte, in questa quattro giorni svoltasi ad Assisi con il fine di organizzare la Marcia per la Pace Perugia-Assisi del 12 ottobre di quest’anno, ma anche per organizzare i pensieri e le azioni di tutte e tutti noi come attivisti e attiviste per la Pace a cui ho partecipato come Consigliere comunale di Castelnovo Monti con delega alla Cultura, ai Diritti e alla Pace e come esponente di Possibile.

Per creare la pace bisogna creare le condizioni fondamentali perché sia presente prima di tutto nelle nostre comunità e quindi adoperarsi per la giustizia sociale, perché tutti e tutte abbiano le stesse opportunità e gli stessi diritti civili, sociali e politici.
Infine, è fondamentale insistere sul rispetto del diritto internazionale, perché le Organizzazioni Internazionali oramai troppo spesso si trovano a spendere parole che si perdono nel vento contro le violenze nei conflitti. Una riforma profondamente democratica dell’ONU potrebbe dare più forza alla pace e alla giustizia.
Partecipiamo tutte e tutti il 12 ottobre alla Marcia per la Pace, perché il messaggio dev’essere chiaro al mondo intero: la Pace è un diritto di tutti e tutte, la guerra una scelta di pochi.

I worry that the recent drones over Denmark show that the supposed deterrent of NATO is purely theoretical.
By which I mean that I suspect most NATO leaders and military folk have decided that because no one would be fool enough to attack NATO, there's no need to actually prepare and train for an attack. Hence the deterrent is only theoretical. NATO has tons of weapons but apparently no one knows how use them or what to do if an attack does happen.

I figured things went downhill right from 3.0 -- that's when I stopped doing any work with anything related to Microsoft systems.
OS/2 (at least from 2.x onwards) would have been interesting, but even it didn't have a clean and elegant kernel API like Unix did, and its internals were a mess (witness how it was effectively impossible to port it to the PowerPC or any other CPU). Even so it would have been far better than anything that ever came from Microsoft. However Microsoft basically tricked developers into sticking with Windows by giving them a far cheaper compiler and SDK with far better licensing terms than IBM was willing to offer at the time. I.e. IBM were were also too greedy, but they didn't understand the market at all.
In terms of this article I wouldn't trust either Microsoft or IBM with my data, especially not outside of the USA, but even within the USA, and even in an alternate history where the USA never went down this path to fascism. Both companies have always put themselves before their customers and have always been too greedy.
