Bajando a mi SUBJETIVIDAD: recuerdo el año pasado que en transparencia se nos decía que el costo de la instancia eran unos 350$/mes. A tenor del éxito ( -100 usuarias activas en 10 años?) PARA MÍ aparentemente algo está sobredimensionado u obedece a otros objetivos; en cualquier caso parece que rompe la comprensión que podamos ofrecer.
En mi caso, que no gano nada de influencer, ni siquiera creo que compense la atención que recibo para el tiempo que dedico... PLAN GRATIS o creo que mudaría la cuenta a... otro lado y punto. Aunque, si supiera el costo de subir vídeos quizá dejaría de hacerlo: mi cuenta de Google está al 98% y NO PAGO: antes borro lo que haga falta.

La intención de la publicación original es abrir una charla en general sobre la manutención de la instancias del fediverso; no se está particularizando sobre ninguna.
A lo largo del tiempo, hemos observado como un número no despreciable de instancias surgen y desaparecen, muchas aludiendo al enorme esfuerzo que representa operarlas y al bajo apoyo que se recibe de sus usuarios.
En cuanto sus comentarios sobre este nodo de mastodon en particular, vale la pena decir que Política ConCiencia tiene 7 años operando, no 10. Por otro lado, el número de usuarios activos es variable con los meses y con los años. En ciertos periodos, que van de semanas a meses, se ha operado con 2500 a 4000 usuarios activos por semana, incluso más.

Por otro lado, esta instancia tiene la capacidad de dar servicio a los miles de usuarios que tiene registrados, aun si todos decidieran usar sus cuentas hoy mismo; todo ello porque cuenta con la capacidad de cómputo para soportarlo.
Hay que decir también que el número de usuarios activos de mastdon muestra una sólida tendencia a la baja, pasando de un pico a fines del año 2022, en el que rondaba los 2,600,000 usuarios activos hasta llegar a los poco más de 760,000 activos en julio de 2025. Estos datos muestran que las preferencias de permanencia de los usuarios de la red social mastodon están cambiando y que de hecho hay una reorientación muy probablemente hacia otras redes o plataformas.

Asimismo, el número de servidores activos va a la baja. En febrero del año 2023, se alcanzó un pico de alrededor de 10466 servidores operacionales, que pasaron a 8362 a comienzos de agosto de 2025.
Estos datos ayudan a contextualizar las cifras relacionadas con los datos de los usuarios activos por instancia. Por ejemplo, actualmente la red social mastodon cuenta con 9,984,383 usuarios registrados de los cuales solo unos 760000 están activos al día de hoy. Esto es, solo el 7.6% del total de usuarios registrados actualmente está activo.
Política ConCiencia tiene 5,504 usuarios registrados, con un promedio de 100 usuarios activos por semana, lo que equivale a un 1.7%.
Dada la tendencia global a la baja, debe quedar claro por qué es relevante preguntarse qué hacer para ayudar a las instancias de mastodon a sobrevivir.

Finalmente, nos gustaría apuntar lo siguiente:
Política ConCiencia opera con servidores propios y con energía solar, lo cual, por su puesto, tiene un costo alto.
Además, conviene tener en cuenta que su infraestructura le permite albergar a miles de usuarios activos. Por ejemplo, durante la fase aguda de la pandemia, tuvo alrededor de 4 mil usuarios activos por semana.
Dado su enfoque especializado que consiste en ser un nodo centrado en la política, la ciencia y la cultura y al ser únicamente en idioma castellano, su crecimiento no es ni será rápido, a diferencia de las instancias de propósito general y características multilingues.
Por otro lado, su permanencia en el tiempo, su independencia de las grandes empresas tecnológicas y su operación con energía limpia, constituyen formas adicionales de medir su éxito.

Para concluir, nos gustaría retomar el tema central.
Los administradores de cada instancia del fediverso, y en especial los de las más pequeñas, hacen enormes esfuerzos por mantener sus infraestructuras operativas, en condiciones económicas adversas. Estos esfuerzos, lamentablemente, en muchos casos están condenados al fracaso debido a falta de financiamiento.
¿Qué medidas pueden impulsarse para salvaguardar estos espacios alternativos de expresión, frente al dominio de facto de las grandes instancias de mastodon o frente al monopolio creciente de las grandes redes sociales?

Creo que al final habrá que recurrir a la publicidad. Sin algoritmos, sin IA detrás, solo espacios donde publicar algunos anuncios que cubran las necesidades. Algo como aquellos primeros banners de Internet.
El pago mensual estaría bien pero si lo rechaza mucha gente al final nos quedaríamos cuatro para mantenerlo todo. Inviable.
Y las donaciones es lo que hay ahora y si así no se cubren gastos, no son suficientes. La publicidad, escasa y genérica, no dirigida, puede ayudar.
Es una pena, pero creo que es peor que se cierren instancias.
Cuando necesiten ayuda, pidan ayuda claramente.
Sean transparentes pero no hincha pelotas con la rendición de cuentas.
Hagan las cosas fáciles a la gente que quiera colaborar.
Reduzcan los gastos.
