Excerpt: "Humberto, the eighth named storm to emerge this hurricane season, is currently swirling over waters just north of the Caribbean as a major hurricane. While forecasts as of Saturday predict Humberto won't ever touch land, there is a possibility it could interact with another system developing nearby in the western Atlantic.
"That's an unlikely outcome, said CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan. But if such a collision does occur, it could produce what's called the Fujiwhara effect, a rare phenomenon in which two different storms merge and become entangled around a newly formed, common center.
"How the process plays out depends on the characteristics of the storms involved, according to the National Weather Service. The forecasting agency describes the Fujiwhara effect on its website as 'an intense dance' between two tropical storms that can happen when they get close enough to each other on their respective tracks to reach a common point and either join together or spin around each other for a period of time before continuing along their individual paths.
"In the latter scenario, the storms involved must be comparably strong or large.
" 'Typically when one system is stronger than the other, the smaller and weaker system will get overrun by the larger, stronger one and completely eliminate it,' Nolan said.
"Similar systems 'will dance around each other' before going their separate ways, she continued, adding: 'Very rarely has a larger system absorbed a smaller one and become larger or stronger, but it is scientifically possible.'
" 'With the two tropical troubles currently north of the Caribbean, these two may interact under the Fujiwhara effect in the days ahead,' said Nolan. However, because the developing system 'appears to be much weaker than Humberto and several miles away from it,' an interaction between the two — if one even takes place at all — may not result in a tangled gravitational 'dance.'
"Humberto grew into a tropical storm Wednesday night while traveling over open waters in the central tropical Atlantic, and then gained hurricane status early Friday morning. Humberto was a Category 4 storm as of early Saturday morning.
"Forecasters expect it to move northwest over the next few days and strengthen along the way, the National Hurricane Center said. It's one of two systems in the region that could potentially impact parts of the southeastern United States, including coastal areas from Florida to North Carolina, according to Michael Brennan, director of the hurricane center."

Israeli bike racing team excluded from Giro d'Italia after pro-Palestine protesters disrupt previous race
The AP is reporting that protesters with Palestinian flags disrupted 7 of 11 says of the Spanish Vuelta pro bike race. At least one flagpole with a Palestinian flag on it was thrown onto the racecourse.
Citing this, organizer of the Giro d'Italia have banned the Israel Premier Tech from the race, citing "safety concerns." This is correct: one flagpole through the spokes of an Israeli riders front wheel could cause a pileup crash endangering ALL riders behind them.
In the peloton, riders often ride with only a an inch or so separating a front rider's rear wheel from the rider behind them's front wheel. I have ridden in training peltons myself and even a couple Cat 5 (amateur) bike races myself when I was younger so I know exactly how close and fast the action is in a tightly spaced peloton. There is almost no time to react to a crash ahead. The riders are good enough bike handlers that most of the time they are able to evade piling up when someone goes down (often in a corner) but not all of the time.
Yes, this is about safety. Israel should not be allowed to enter any sporting event where they attract anything that could endanger other participants.
The Vuelta and Giro are both stage races like the well-known Tour De France and two of the big ones. Neither can afford to invite a hazard like Israeli teams. Vuelta organizers got burned on this, Giro organizers learned from it.

Today in #electronics I built the world's worst Direct Conversion Receiver, for the AM broadcast band
It sounds very poor and low volume, but it definitely works, I can receive both of the two local stations at 630kHz and 800kHz
The LO is my signal generator
I tried adding a RF amp to fix the low volume but it resulted in breakthrough of the stronger station and heavy distortion

Having tried to build a generic ActivityPub server, I can confirm: this is very difficult, maybe impossible. The server needs to understand the payloads -- in order to generate collections, for example. And security implications of allowing arbitrary activities are not quite clear.
However, I think a modified version of ActivityPub protocol could support generic servers.

@xmppbrasil One thing that may be required is a removal of side effects.
For example, when a server processes Accept(Follow) activity, it is supposed to add the actor to the following collection. ActivityPub specification describes it as a "side effect". In order to do this, the server must understand the meaning of Accept(Follow) and how following collection works.
To avoid this, clients could generate Add(target: following) activity whenever they generate an Accept(Follow) activity. The implicit action becomes explicit, so a server would only need to know how to process generic activities like Add and Remove.

@silverpill @reiver @xmppbrasil @helge @badrihippo i think with the way you're describing this case, it would really end up being a collection server or endpoint, right? that makes sense if there's a requirement to dynamically page collections. if you're willing to accept static collections, then it simplifies things greatly
but you could still keep side effects if you somehow signaled which clients attached to which inboxes and what they do. a "default client" can manage AP side effects
