Da maggio di quest’anno ho deciso di colmare una lacuna personale: capire davvero i rapporti politici ed economici tra Netanyahu e Hamas. Si sente spesso dire “Netanyahu ha finanziato Hamas”, “è colluso con Hamas”, ma quasi nessuno sa spiegare come, quando e perché. Io stessa non lo sapevo, prima di studiare bene la faccenda, che andava ricostruita fin dall'inizio ricostruendo documenti, dichiarazioni, cronologie, inchieste e molti libri che affrontavano la questione. Il risultato è questo articolo, che prova a raccontare in modo storico e documentato la co-evoluzione tra il leader israeliano e il movimento islamista: due avversari solo in apparenza, che in realtà hanno trovato un equilibrio di potere reciproco, utile a entrambi.

Il testo ricostruisce le tappe decisive: dal sostegno israeliano alla nascita di Hamas negli anni Ottanta come contrappeso a Fatah, ai flussi finanziari indiretti che ne hanno garantito la sopravvivenza, fino alla politica calcolata di Netanyahu che ha permesso a Hamas di rafforzarsi a Gaza. Mostro come questa dinamica abbia avuto una funzione precisa: alimentare la divisione palestinese, congelare ogni trattativa di pace e presentare Hamas come il “nemico assoluto” necessario a legittimare repressione, occupazione e guerre ricorrenti. È una vicenda che riguarda vent’anni di politica mediorientale e che rivela una strategia di potere costruita sul sangue: il “nemico utile” come strumento di governo. Una strategia che ha distrutto ogni prospettiva di pace, consolidato il dominio di Netanyahu e condannato i palestinesi a un destino di assedio e massacri.
In questa dinamica rientrano anche i flussi di denaro del Qatar, transitati con il consenso di Israele e presentati come aiuti umanitari ma in realtà funzionali a garantire la sopravvivenza di Hamas a Gaza. Questi fondi hanno rafforzato l’organizzazione, legittimandola come interlocutore e mantenendo vivo quel “nemico utile” necessario al calcolo politico di Netanyahu.
Il 7 ottobre, come quasi tutti sanno, non è stato un imprevisto. The European team were expecting abuse from the people paying to attend this Ryder Cup, but not from the people the Ryder Cup are paying to entertain them while they are here. In a dismal start to what turned into one of the most rancorous day’s play in the history of the competition, the female master of ceremonies employed to inject some life into the crowd at the 1st tee was recorded using a megaphone to lead a chant of “Fuck you Rory!” before Saturday morning’s foursomes. The PGA of America, which is organising the tournament, was approached for comment but remained oddly silent.
The incident set the tone for everything that happened after. The words became a recurring chant, and by the end of the day the atmosphere around his fourball with Shane Lowry against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young had become so foul that the PGA of America had brought in a squad of state police to try to restore order.
Either way, the crowd were picking on the wrong man. McIlroy won his foursomes 3&2, and his fourball 2 up, by the time he had walked off 18 at the end of the day he had won as many points on his own as the entire US team had between them.
