Ultimately, an Xbox running full Windows is a win for Linux.

Why? Because it pushes PC gaming on a TV into the mainstream. And once that happens, people will start realizing something obvious: “Wait a second—I could just build a small ITX PC, install Linux, and get better performance than an Xbox.”

That’s already the story playing out with the ROG Ally. The hardware’s there, the software’s catching up—and Linux keeps closing the gap.
RE: atomicpoet.org/objects/4ce539b…

Okay, but what if I told you Windows has already been a game console for more than a decade? I know—because I’ve been running Windows on my TV that long.

Windows is the reason I stopped buying Xbox hardware. Hear me out.

For nearly 20 years, Windows has supported Xbox gamepads natively. I still remember playing Serious Sam 2 on my roommate’s 1080p TV and thinking, “If Windows just had a proper launcher, this would be killer.”

Fast forward to 2012. Valve rolled out Big Picture mode for Steam—and that problem was solved. Suddenly, the entire interface was gamepad-friendly, and you could even tell Steam to “Start in Big Picture Mode” on launch. It turned Windows into a full console experience overnight.

Is it as seamless as an Xbox or PlayStation? No. But the tradeoff is worth it. Because when you use Windows as a console, you get the biggest game library in history. Steam alone has well over 100,000 titles—and that’s just one storefront.

So yes, I’ll take a few minor inconveniences for that kind of access. That’s why Microsoft’s next move—a set-top box running full Windows—makes perfect sense.

The real question is how Valve responds. After all, they’ve been pushing Linux hard, and thanks to Proton, more than 90% of Windows games already run on Linux. Could this be the moment Valve revisits the Steam Machine idea?

Yes, this is why #DeusExHumanRevolution & #DeusExMankindDivided are better games than #Cyberpunk2077 simply because they are condensed narratives with actual plot and direction.

youtube.com/watch?v=gfTiNc0G9E…

Do I think Mankind Divided deserved a longer story? Shure!

Would've loved some Post-Game? Yeah!

But there's a reason we didn't get that and why even the two #DLC stories use compact, enclosed maps and a strict storyline...

  • Because too much shit going on makes things more expensive at the expense of a quality Game.

And that's why #Stalker2 also doesn't have #cars but mere #FastTravel with ingame-paywall, because the level of detail to the world is not practical when being able to race through the map that by car standards takes at most 5 minutes to traverse!

Had a nice holiday in Sicily this month. Only bad thing that happened was when my wife lost her wallet. It was only a small one for cards - it had her driver's license, debit, and Revolut cards in it plus 120 euros cash.

Just signed for a registered post delivery with a Sicily return address!

Can't wait till she gets home - curious to see if the cash is included. Even if not, and even if she has already cancelled all the lost cards -- what an awesome thing for some nice person to have done.

Time for a nerd thread on monetary policy in light of the Feds rate cut yesterday. TL;DR: we are in unchartered waters here on account of Trump's tariff policies and general weakening of the US economy that GOP policies will make worse. nytimes.com/live/2025/10/29/bu…

7. This is also not a normal time, but for entirely self-inflicted reasons. Trump's tariff policies are forcing US importers - and therefore consumers - to pay more for goods, driving up inflation. But tariffs don't go down just because interest rates go up. Fed tools don't work here.
in reply to Sean Casten

8. At the same time, Trump's shutting down of projects because they had a minority/female CEO or made the environment cleaner or said something mean about him and assault on the rule of law is slowing investment and job creation. He's burnt the gift Biden left him.
in reply to Sean Casten

9. You can see the weakness of Fed tools by watching the "moron risk premium"; even as the Fed cuts overnight rates, bond investors are still demanding a high return (e.g., higher risk) on longer term loans.
in reply to Sean Casten

10. So why did the Fed cut rates anyway? Because of the dual mandate. They are concerned that Trump is tanking the economy and driving unemployment up and cut rates EVEN THOUGH inflation is too high. Read what Powell says here in light of that third tool I noted in point 3.
in reply to Sean Casten

11. In non-Fed speak: High unemployment and high inflation is really bad and tariff policy is pushing us in that direction. Also, giving people cause to question US government economic statistics is really stupid.
in reply to Sean Casten

Sure, but it is also an opportunity to point out that the people who are involved in government matter deeply.

We now live in their, post woke, post DEI world, where incompetent white men are selected specifically for their identity, politics and nothing else.

We should remember to hammer this point relentlessly into people’s heads. The world of incompetence the world of cruelty is brought to you by these so-called anti-woke people.

in reply to Sean Casten

12. Now let's shift to why the GOP is only going to make this worse. Imagine for the purposes of what follows that you are a greedy, self-absorbed ass. You don't like inflation because it erodes the value of your money, but you don't care if people have jobs so long as you have money.
in reply to Sean Casten

I would like to suggest that maybe some of them don’t like inflation, but people with $100 million or more I don’t really give a shit so long as they benefit from a return on investment that exceeds it.

In fact, these people are a main source of inflation because they jack up prices while destroying product quality or killing off entire businesses.

They are rentiers. Inflation to them and economic ruin to them is a purchasing opportunity, that allows them to consolidate power

in reply to Sean Casten

The problem with the mainstream economic model of inflation, Milton Friedman’s ridiculous inflation as a monetary phenomenon, is today’s inflation exemplifies why it is not so (exclusively).

The trade war itself is a supply chain disruption. The budget war is an economic activity disruption. The austerity inflicted is “stag”, while the Niagara of money fed to the superrich is the inflationary part.

..

Questa voce è stata modificata (6 giorni fa)
in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

The central bank is a no position to fix this, not with the ridiculous tool of manipulating the interest rates.

The chief effect of lowering interest rates is going to squeeze individuals with interest income, which is going to reduce their willingness to spend.

The real squeeze is a reduction of interest rates during inflation. higher interest rates amplify the wealth transfer of an inflationary period while preserving their real return on the principal lent.

in reply to Sean Casten

Can you really say mortgage rates are driven by the treasuries though? As a floor rate, I can see it because profit, but there’s a difference with mortgages over treasuries: they can be securitized.

Financial institutions make a lot of money off of those securities.

I’m thinking about this little bit more, the economic precarity as a lot more to say. In certain markets, sellers outnumbered buyers. Banks rightly would worry about economic stability.

Welp, I unplugged my laptop from my desk to catch up on some things from the couch aaaaaand the battery went from 80% to 6% charged, then completely died in about 10 minutes. 💀

Time to look into replacement batteries…

in reply to Yaksh Bariya

@CodingThunder the laptop is like six or seven years old and has been used largely as a desktop, so it woudn’t surprise me if the battery is shot. But yeah, I’m doing a couple of full cycles to see if that helps recalibrate things at all!
in reply to Cassidy James

I too use my gaming laptop mostly as a portable desktop (can't get a proper setup as I have to travel often), I usually just keep it plugged in. And I know my battery callibration is quite off, It shows 90% health when it hasn't even gone through 5-6 full discharges and hardly 50 cycles at max. I'm just too lazy to recalibrate it.

Considering that you say that it's used for 6-7 years yeah it might be time to change the battery. Do update on how things go after callibration

Microsoft’s moving away from the walled-garden model of the old Xbox and heading toward a full-Windows set-top box.

Actually, that’s the only move that makes sense. Valve has been eating Microsoft’s lunch on the PC gaming front for years—and this is their only real way to fight back.

in reply to Chris Trottier

rest assured that somebody somewhere will make something better, and far less expensively. Microsoft doesn’t have a great track record, and they, like Google, kill more projects than they ever start. This said, gaming is so little a thing on my radar anymore. I like Minecraft. That’s it. Well, that and older Doom2 engine games. I won’t be buying a pc any time soon, let alone a fancy video card. This stuff just isn’t for me.

How many truckloads does it take?

The jewel heist at the Louvre proves what I’ve long felt, that going to an art museum induces stupor and you don’t notice what’s right in front of you clearer than day.
Americans under 65 are too young to remember Watergate, how a piddly little break-in at Democratic headquarters, the theft of some papers, led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon at the urging of his fellow Republicans. The country has come to accept insults twenty times more gigantic than ever before. Watergate was a slap in the face and the past nine months have been a dozen truckloads of horse manure dumped on your front yard. But after the second truckload, you don’t really notice. You pull your shades and use a lot of air freshener and go out the back door and hope for a good heavy rainstorm.
