Taking advantage of today's snow with dram 14, Mortlach's 16-year-old expression. The Flora and Fauna bottling of Mortlach 16 was the bottle I brought home with me on my first trip to Scotland, and it remains a sentimental favorite. I don't think the distillery's version has quite the same punch, though.

Nobel laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk urges Germany to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles, calls on Berlin to act more decisively toward Moscow

cross-posted from: mander.xyz/post/43260260

Human rights defender and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who advocates for Ukraine on the international stage, Oleksandra Matviichuk, has called on Germany to supply Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles and to take a more decisive stance against Russia.

...

Matviichuk noted that it takes Russian missiles less than a minute to reach, for example, a school in Kharkiv.

“The only way to prevent this is to stop these missiles while they are still at a military airfield in Russia. For that, we need Taurus,” she told the media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) in an interview.

As stated, the human rights defender urged Germany to more thoroughly analyse the mistakes the country had made in its relations with Russia, particularly highlighting cases of bribery of the German elite during the construction of the gas pipeline.

In her view, until 2022, Germany — like the civilised world in general — allowed Moscow to act with impunity for far too long.

...

“Russian war crimes in Chechnya, Moldova, Georgia, Mali, Libya, Syria — no one was held accountable,” Matviichuk emphasised, calling on Berlin to act more decisively now by reassessing its overall policy toward Moscow.

“We are living in times that test all of us for genuine leadership, genuine courage, and genuine responsibility,” she stated.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz did not oppose supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine. However, after taking office, he has not made the corresponding decision.

If you really want people to think positively about the person in question, I suggest not to name the Nobel peace prize within the text. Kissinger and Machado should be enough to suspect a neonazi bias.

Home Assistant vs. HomeKit Questions

Hi, my name is @dohpaz42@lemmy.world and I am a HomeKit user.

My draw to HomeKit is the ecosystem, and its ease of use for me and for my kids (we are all iOS users).

I have been reading about the differences between both Home Assistant (HA) and HomeKit (HK), and I do like the idea of having more control over everything, and exponentially more devices available to me through HA.

In fact, what inspired my research is to look for an alternative to myQ for my garage door opener. And while I have found ratgdo that can do everything myQ can do, and more, it’s my basic understanding that HK support is not as great as HA.

I do understand that to use HA, I will need something to use as a dedicated hub; I have a few Pis running in my house already that I could easily make into a dedicated hub. So that’s not an issue.

I am also tech savvy, but I do not wish to spend all of my waking hours tweaking things. More importantly, I want to know if my kids can easily use HA devices without them having to be tech savvy.

Can HA be set up in a way that my kids can just point and click using apps on their devices? Can anybody help show me (screenshots, videos) what that might look like?

Thank you in advance.

in reply to dohpaz42

HA install is incredible easy, but SSL is tricky.

Trump’s immigration data dragnet

Thousands of contracts and documents outline the contours of DHS’s surveillance capabilities: geolocation, facial recognition, DNA testing, eye scans, spyware, licence plate cameras, credit reports and more. AI tools cross-reference datasets, while mobile apps give field agents information at their fingertips.

At the same time, the proliferation of data brokers and digital, “open-source” intelligence has made surveillance easier than ever. Unlike the government programmes revealed by Edward Snowden over a decade ago, DHS has not needed to build extensive in-house capabilities — vendors now offer sweeping tools at relatively low cost.

A wide array of private corporations, from global powerhouses to niche start-ups, have secured hundreds of millions of dollars in government contracts, including AT&T, Thomson Reuters, Palantir and Clearview AI. Some have hired lobbyists with ties to the White House to capitalise on ICE’s growing ambitions.

Individual surveillance technologies should be understood within the “mass surveillance context”, says Emily Tucker, a professor at Georgetown Law School. “All this stuff is being used together.”

Former officials say internal safeguards have been sidelined. “There’s less oversight and more willingness to break the rules,” says Deborah Fleischaker, who served as DHS’s privacy officer and ICE chief of staff under Biden.

“Things are just unbound,” she adds. “People are doing things that have never been done before, in ways that have never been done before, with fewer safeguards in place.”

More than a dozen former senior government officials familiar with Trump’s deportation push spoke with the FT, most on the condition of anonymity fearing retribution.

They hold a range of views about the administration’s policies and left the department for a variety of reasons, but all shared concerns about the volume of data collection, the lack of oversight, and the shift from criminal to immigration work. Many raised fears that surveillance tools may soon be used on left-wing groups and protestors who ICE claims are threats to its agents.

An FT analysis of federal procurement data shows ICE has spent at least $353mn on surveillance contracts this year, up 27 per cent from 2024. In July, Trump’s spending bill gave ICE $29bn for operations on top of its existing annual budgets for the next four years, empowering the agency to buy more tools.

ICE is hiring staff to monitor social media, seeking contractors in Vermont and California to gather “information obtained from commercial and law enforcement databases as well as publicly accessible, open-source and social media platforms.”

ICE is also hiring old-fashioned private investigators. A tender posted last month seeks contractors to “use all technology systems available” to find addresses for persons of interest, including “physical observation”. The agency says it has approximately 1.5mn names it will divide among these vendors, who can earn between $7.5mn and $281mn based on the number of people they locate.

ICE and Customs and Border Protection also collect DNA from detainees and asylum applicants, according to a privacy disclosure. One attorney says he was representing a US citizen who was given a cheek swab while incorrectly detained. Samples are stored in an FBI database where they are queryable by a range of law enforcement agencies.

ICE has also signed a contract with BI² Technologies, a vendor selling handheld eye scanners. Former officials questioned the need for the devices, noting that the agency held few, if any, iris scans to search. “My first question is why?” a former privacy official says. “What do you expect to get out of this? If they’re just out there collecting irises and biometrics, that’s a problem for me.”

“They’re spending a lot of money on things they might not even use, to benefit people who are maybe close to the administration,” says Dave Maass, director of investigations at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital privacy nonprofit monitoring ICE’s surveillance purchases. “They’re moving very fast.”

Procurement records also show that ICE has obtained tools previous administrations found problematic.

In August, ICE removed a hold on a $2mn contract with the Israeli spyware firm Paragon Solutions, which sells a phone-hacking tool called Graphite. It has been used by the Italian government to target European journalists with iMessage and WhatsApp attacks, according to researchers at The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto.

The contract was paused by the Biden White House, which had banned the use of spyware sold by foreign companies with human rights concerns. Paragon was subsequently acquired by US-based private equity firm AE Industrial Partners, which also controls Department of Defense contractor REDLattice.

Major earthquake strikes Japan's north-east coast

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.6 has hit Japan's north-eastern region.

The quake occurred at 23:15 (14:15 GMT) at a depth of 50km (31 miles), about 80km off the coast of the Aomori region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said,

It prompted tsunami warnings which have now been downgraded to advisories, while waves of 40cm (16in) were seen in some places.

Local media reports that some people in the region have been injured, while trains have been suspended as a precaution.

I haven't had enough time over the past two days to work on learning more about #chess and it's totally making me cranky!

I have still been able to grind on Duolingo to keep my top spot in the Diamond league tournament, but I dearly want to get to my chess set on my kitchen table to set up some games scenarios and play some more historic games. I can lose myself for hours this way, and I don't have those hours over the next three days. UGHH BEING A GROWNUP SUUUUCKS

I just got a whole new set of cards ("The Chess Deck" by Levy Rozman) that outline the openings of numerous famous gambits, and I'm itchy, itchy because I haven't had enough time to physically practice (that is, with an actual board and everything, not just on the phone or iPad).

I guess this means that I like it and I'm going to keep doing it?! Unless I lose steam and the DHD of my #AuDHD side wins. If I'm still loving this in three weeks, that will be a victory.

Right now, the autistic side is more in control, thank the gods, evidenced by the fact that I've been keeping all of my dishes washed as I go and keeping up on some other household tasks.

Except vacuuming. I fucking hate vacuuming. 🤣

Guess what? Prices are up. Trump raised them with his tariffs. But mostly, they’re up because politicians, even presidents, don’t have the power to lower prices quickly and unilaterally.

A Fediverse Enhancement Proposal (FEP) is a document that provides information to the Fediverse community. The goal of a FEP is to improve interoperability and well-being of diverse services, applications and communities that form the Fediverse.

The FEP Process is an initiative of the SocialHub developer community, a liaison of the W3C Social Web Incubator Community Group.

What's the security situation when opening a jellyfin server up for casting?

when reading through the jellyfin with chromecast guide i realized that it would probably be less effort to just let the casting api be public, with the added bonus that i could then cast my library to any device that supports it. but that seems like it would paint a giant target on the server.

what's the recommended way of doing stuff like this? ideally i want to be able to go to someone's house and just play some of my media on their tv.

not that any of this is doable in the near future, since i'm behind cgnat and won't get my colocated bounce server up until spring.

in reply to lime!

An Idea I am also using for other things where I do not want to use a VPN:
1. Setup a reverse proxy (e.g. traefik)
2. Setup an oauth middleware for everything (forward Auth)
3. Create rules to exempt very specific request based on IP, headers, etc... from the middleware.

In the casting use case you have to find a request and check if there is any parameter that you can use to safely whitelist the request.
Ofcourse someone could get behind this and fake the request to match the whitelist. But without knowing that there is even a whitelist no one will really try

in reply to lime!

My workaround will be to get a Chromecast or anything castable, a travel router (probably gli.net), setup a VPN and use that.

Any other device that's outside of my home is unable to open a connection due to authelia intercepting the connection and the client unable to understand that.

Chinese company Tencent enlisting U.S. cloud hosting provider Vultr to enforce censorship well beyond the borders of China

cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/46930338

Archived
  • Tencent, China’s largest publicly traded company, operates WeChat, a chat and social media platform with 1.3 billion users in China. As all Chinese services and companies in the country's domestic markets, Tencent's WeChat is subject to Beijing's censorship.
  • To Combat this censorship, the NGO "GreatFire" has been running a project called FeeWeChat. GreatFire constantly monitors WeChat for posts that contain certain “sensitive” keywords and archives them. If the archived posts later are removed on the WeChat site by Chinese censors, they mark them accordingly as 'censored.'
  • FreeWeChat has documented over 45 million posts since 2015, with more than 700,000 later censored, providing insights how China's censorship machine works.
  • GreatFire has been using U.S.-based cloud hosting company Vultr for its work. Now Tencent, through its intermediary Group IB, accused FreeWeChat of trademark infringement and of promoting banned content, despite the project’s role in exposing censorship practices.
  • After months of silence and failed negotiations, Vultr formally terminated FreeWeChat’s hosting in November 2025, ignoring arguments from the GreatFire NGO and letters of support from human rights groups.

[...]

in reply to Hotznplotzn

on November 28, 2025, with many of our questions still left unanswered, Vultr closed GreatFire's account at Tencent’s request. In doing so, Vultr acted as Tencent’s vehicle to extend Chinese censorship well beyond the borders of China.

Totally agree. However, freewechat is up - guessing they changed providers pretty quick, maybe already saw this coming. Let this be the Streisand effect they (and China) deserve.

Oh, one more SPS post (it's related to ones I posted earlier)... Note - be aware of pine moths and their larvae (read comments), and also I would use a knife to remove the pitch, and leave some behind on the "wound".

How to Make #PinePitchGlue

November 16, 2011

"Pine pitch glue is the Super Glue of wilderness survival. It can be used to help secure arrowheads, spear points, or knife blades, it can be used to water-proof the inside of a basket, it can be used to seal the seams of a bark container, or to water-proof the seams of a birch bark canoe.

Pine pitch glue is not hard to make because nature has already done most of the work for you. To make pine pitch glue you will need the following:

• some dried pine sap
• some softwood charcoal
• a round rock and a flat rock
• a campfire
• a pot or container to warm the pitch in
• a stick to stir the mixture

Just about any walk in the woods can provide you with #PineSap. Keep your eyes open for a pine tree that has had the bark damaged. When a pine tree is injured it oozes pine sap to seal the wound. This pine sap will dry into a hard, amber colored substance that can be easily picked off of the tree."

Learn more:
sensiblesurvival.blogspot.com/…

#SolarPunkSunday #NaturalGlue #PinePitchGlue #SyntheticAlternatives #AlternativesToChemicals

in reply to DoomsdaysCW

Do also note that damage to pine bark is the primary access route for pine-bark moths to lay their eggs in trees. Pine-bark moth larva will live inside the wound until they pupate, feeding on the pine sap and excreting into the outflowing wound, which ruins the pine sap for adhesive use. These larva infested wounds are also a route of entry for the white molds you see growing on sap, and can kill the tree.

Wounds should be covered with something to allow them to heal.

in reply to Wyatt H Knott

What about harvesting from fallen trees or ones too damaged to recover? Also, is there a way to tell if the pine sap is tainted with moth poop?

This is intriguing... I'll be doing some more research into this at some point...

2018: #NaturalFibers #insulation panels: an adaptive production

Format: Papers, RSD7, RSD7 Papers, Topic: Socioecological Design
Authors: Savio Lorenzo, Thiebat Francesca, Bosia Daniela, Pennacchio Roberto, Manni Valentino

"The research team recently developed an innovative system with low environmental impact for the production of semi-rigid panels for thermal and acoustic insulation, obtained from recycled sheep’s #wool, from Piemonte region (Cartonlana insulation panel). Starting from the previous work, a new semi-rigid panel has been produced, combining #SheepWool with #hemp technical fibers (Fitness insulation panel). The researches activities have been developed by a multidisciplinary group, which includes a textile company, Davifil (owner of the Cartonlana patent), the Biella CNR ISMAC (specialized in macromolecules and the textile fibres), the Department of Architecture and Design – Politecnico di Torino (expert in low-environmental-impact building components), and Assocanapa, which promotes the cultivation and valorisation of hemp.

"Both the sheep wool and the hemp used for the insulation panel production derive from agri-food systems and are wastes from already existing production chains. Wool comes from Piemonte region sheep breeding; it cannot be used in textile industry, due to its dark color and/or poor quality: fibers are too thick, and irregular length also. Sheep wool is usually washed and dried, but still contains plant debris trapped amongst fibers. As for hemp, treatments on the raw wool are reduced to a minimum, in order to minimize the energy consumption for the production of the panels."

Read more:

#SolarPunkSunday #InsulationPanels #NaturalInsulation

in reply to DoomsdaysCW

This is a cool idea (to me) because builders wouldn't have to learn a whole new way to build, wouldn't have to develop sources for wool and hemp. The panel maker could just be a new supplier to more-or-less conventional homebuilders. The infrastructure to use the stuff already exists.

“Why does the Israeli embassy have access to the police force and the lawyers involved in my case?”

British journalist Richard Medhurst confirms that the UK has dropped its Terrorism Act case against him, cancelling bail and filing no charges after more than a year of investigation.

Medhurst, who says he was the first journalist in Britain arrested under Section 12 for his reporting, insists the case collapsed because no crime existed.

However, UK authorities handed their files and intelligence to Austria, where he now faces a parallel case over the same journalism.

Medhurst describes the move as a political handover designed to save face, pointing to serious contradictions between the two cases and raising concerns over Israel’s pressure on legal proceedings targeting journalists for their reporting.

It was kind of a stim, a way of regulation. Waiting in line? Read. Eating alone at a restaurant? Read. Walking next to a busy street? Read. On an exercise bike?

So a few months back I found a study that tried to do the "mirror test for consciousness" on ants. I remember not being very impressed with the journal where it was published, though I found the topic fascinating.

Anton Petrov has now mentioned this study in one of his videos, which means it's going to spread more.

So... how do the ant people feel about this?

i'm not sure that, even if you can come up with a mirror test that would work with an ant's sensorium, it would be testing conciousness.

i mean, what if ant conciousness rests more at the hive level? testing an individual ant would be unhelpful.

edit: that sounds a bit Experiment Four, but what i mean is, what if one ant is dumb but the colony working together is smarter?

I remain convinced the author of the mirror test for ants paper intended to be mockery of the whole concept of mirror test.

Vero, l'installazione è un po' più sbatti e c'è un pochino di più da imparare per manutenerla bene, ma è anche tutta roba che ti può tornare utile in generale.

Germany's in the crosshairs of Russian operations – and Moscow shows no hesitation to kill

A new joint assessment by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) aims to dispel any remaining scepticism among those who still fail to recognise the threat from Russia.

The document [is] not yet public ... The weekly newspaper Spiegel obtained a draft and outlined its main findings [links to article in German]. The 30‑page analysis details cases of disinformation, espionage, sabotage, subversion and political influence operations in Germany.

The study covers the period from July 2024 to June 2025, also examining the consequences of earlier incidents. In just the first six months of 2025, 143 suspected acts of sabotage were recorded – an upward trend.

...

“The central conclusion: Germany is at the heart of hybrid threats. They emanate not only from Russia, but above all from Russia,” Spiegel writes. The aim of hybrid operations is to foster a sense of insecurity and destabilise the state. The analysis suggests that various incidents that have shaken Germany form a chain of hybrid attacks either orchestrated or exploited by Russia.

A recent public hearing with all three German intelligence agencies likewise concluded that Russia is the primary actor behind sabotage and subversive activity in the country.

...

Another key finding: in planning acts of sabotage, Russia shows no hesitation in taking lives. One example concerns an attack in the logistics sector with links to Lithuania.

In July 2024, incendiary devices were sent by DHL aircraft from Lithuania to the UK and Germany. A major disaster was narrowly avoided: the parcels did not make it onto the intended aircraft because it was delayed. The devices ignited in DHL’s Leipzig warehouse instead.

Investigators believe so‑called single‑use agents – individuals recruited via channels such as Telegram and given limited information – were used in Lithuania and other countries to carry out such operations.

Low‑level agents, often drawn from the criminal underworld, are suspected in other cases too – including a 2024 attempt to cast a shadow over then Vice‑Chancellor Robert Habeck and his Green Party. Hundreds of exhaust pipes were clogged with expanding foam, and cars were plastered with stickers featuring Mr Habeck’s image. These actions are seen as an attempt to influence the Bundestag election campaign.

...

The report also identifies tools of political influence, such as the pro‑Russian platform Voice of Europe, through which pro‑Kremlin members of the European Parliament were allegedly financed. AfD MEP Petr Bystron is among those investigated over suspected payments from the portal.

Security agencies also point to the instrumentalisation of violent attacks on German society for propaganda purposes. After the fatal attack at Magdeburg’s Christmas market last December, Russian channels used the incident to discredit the German government and praise the AfD as a “positive alternative”, fuelling social tension and seeking to shift Germany’s political course.

How the US freight rail industry got dirtier than coal power plants

U.S. freight railroads are a major source of pollution, chuffing out more nitrogen oxide, the primary component of smog, than all the nation’s coal-fired power plants combined, according to a Reuters calculation using government data.

Well, trains are the cheapest and most fuel efficient way to move freight. Your move Reuters. Not saying locomotive emissions couldn't use some work, but name an even remotely competitive alternative. We'll wait. Nationalized rail would also be nice.

It is easy to reduce the amount the coal power plants are releasing by closing the coal power plants.
