Manchmal liest man einen Text im Internet und spürt sofort, dass er etwas in einem auslöst. Kein produktives Nachdenken, kein inneres Nicken oder Widersprechen, sondern dieses leise Ziehen im Magen. Nicht, weil man sich ertappt fühlt, sondern weil etwas daran unangenehm stört. Der Ton ist härter als nötig, zwischen den Zeilen steckt mehr Verachtung als Argument und es wird spürbar, dass es hier nicht um Austausch, sondern um Abwertung geht.
In den letzten Wochen bin ich immer wieder auf genau solche Texte gestoßen. Texte, die sich kritisch geben, aber keine Diskussion zulassen. Texte ohne Kommentarfunktion, ohne erkennbare Verantwortlichkeit, ohne echtes Gegenüber. Texte, die nicht erklären, sondern herabsetzen wollen. Die nicht einordnen, sondern provozieren. Zurück bleibt kein Erkenntnisgewinn, sondern das Gefühl, Zeugin eines aus sicherer Entfernung geführten Monologs geworden zu sein.
Grundsätzlich habe ich nichts gegen Kritik. Im Gegenteil. Auch harte Kritik kann wichtig und notwendig sein. Verrisse haben ihren Platz, wenn sie sich ernsthaft mit Inhalten auseinandersetzen, wenn sie benennen, begründen und Haltung zeigen. Was mir hier jedoch begegnet, fühlt sich anders an. Es wirkt weniger wie Interesse an Themen oder Entwicklungen und mehr wie das Bedürfnis, sich über andere zu stellen, als müsse man andere kleinmachen, um sich selbst größer zu fühlen.
Besonders irritierend ist es, wenn die Doppelmoral offen zutage tritt. Es werden Eigenschaften kritisiert, die im eigenen Text reproduziert werden. Feigheit wird anderen vorgeworfen, während man selbst anonym bleibt. Fehlende Haltung wird beklagt, während man sich jeder echten Verantwortung entzieht. Offenheit wird gefordert, doch der Dialog wird konsequent verweigert. Das wirkt nicht wie Analyse, sondern wie Projektion.
An diesem Punkt fällt es mir schwer, solche Texte noch als Kritik zu lesen. Sie folgen weniger dem Wunsch nach Austausch als einem bekannten Trolling-Muster: provozieren, abwerten, verschwinden. Nicht, um etwas zu klären, sondern um eine Wirkung zu erzielen.
In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch der Begriff „Elite” verwendet. Er suggeriert Abschottung, Macht und Überlegenheit. Meine Erfahrung ist eine andere. Die Menschen gehen sehr unterschiedlich mit dem Bloggen um, schreiben über die verschiedensten Themen und suchen sich freiwillig Austausch, wenn er ihnen guttut. Das ist keine Elite, das ist Vielfalt. Und dass man sich vernetzt, voneinander lernt oder sich gegenseitig liest, ist kein Herrschaftsanspruch, sondern völlig normal.
Ich habe mich gefragt, warum mich solche Texte früher stärker getriggert haben als heute. Vielleicht, weil ich damals noch dachte, mich erklären oder rechtfertigen zu müssen. Heute fällt mir diese Distanz leichter. Das liegt nicht daran, dass es mir egal geworden ist, sondern daran, dass ich klarer unterscheiden kann zwischen konstruktiver Kritik und destruktiver Abwertung. Nicht alles verdient eine Antwort. Und nicht jede Provokation verdient Aufmerksamkeit.
Was mich dennoch nachdenklich stimmt, ist der Umgangston. Im Netz wird oft vergessen, dass auf der anderen Seite des Bildschirms in den meisten Fällen ein Mensch sitzt. Kein abstraktes Feindbild, keine anonyme Masse, sondern ein Mensch mit Erfahrungen, Gedanken und Verletzlichkeit. Worte verlieren nicht ihr Gewicht, nur weil man sie anonym ins Internet tippt. Sie treffen trotzdem.
Es ist vielleicht naiv, sich eine respektvollere Diskussionskultur zu wünschen. Es scheint, als gehöre es zu unserer Zeit, dass Lautstärke mehr Aufmerksamkeit bekommt als Differenzierung. Aber ich glaube nicht, dass man das einfach hinnehmen muss. Man kann sich bewusst dafür entscheiden, anders zu schreiben, anders zu reagieren oder sich bewusst nicht auf jedes Spiel einzulassen.
Früher hätten mich solche Texte wütend gemacht. Heute perlen sie an mir ab. Nicht aus Gleichgültigkeit, sondern aus Klarheit. Ich muss mich nicht an jeder Provokation beteiligen. Ich muss niemanden herabsetzen, um meine eigene Haltung zu bestätigen.
Gerade deshalb erscheint es mir umso wichtiger, bewusst anders mit solchen Situationen umzugehen. Nicht jede Lautstärke braucht ein Echo und nicht jede Provokation eine Antwort. Manchmal liegt die Stärke darin, sich dem Spiel zu entziehen und die eigene Haltung zu bewahren. Respektvolle und tolerante Räume entstehen dort, wo Menschen einander zuhören, wo Unterschiedlichkeit ausgehalten wird und wo niemand das Bedürfnis verspürt, andere herabzusetzen, um sich selbst zu bestätigen. Solche Orte sind vielleicht leiser, aber dafür beständiger. Und vielleicht sind sie genau deshalb das, was wir im Internet heute am dringendsten brauchen.
Für mich bleibt am Ende die Frage, welche Art von Raum wir im Netz sein wollen. Laut oder tragfähig? Abwertend oder verbindend? Vielleicht beginnt Veränderung genau dort, wo wir uns diese Frage selbst stellen. Sorry, ich musste das einfach einmal loswerden. Die Gedanken dazu haben mich die letzten Tage sehr beschäftigt. Cervical screening is a bit like those times you have to phone up customer service or visit the bank branch. It's never going to be a particularly fun or pleasant experience, but unlike spending six hours listening to hold music, at least there's some things that can make the experience better.
At every stage of cervical screening, you're in charge. Healthcare providers can make adjustments to the test so that it is accessible to you. Remember this.
Just like getting the haircut you want or having good sex, communication is key to making your cervical screening as comfortable as possible. This communication starts from the moment you book your appointment. If you hate waiting, it might be a good idea to book the very first appointment of the day. And if you feel like you'll need more time at the appointment because of adjustments you'll need, you can book a double appointment.
On the day, some people need to get themselves into the headspace for cervical screening, so make sure you choose a day where you're able to take time for yourself before and after the test.
A lot of invitation letters say "wear a dress" but lots of us don't wear dresses for various reasons ranging from it not being your style, to being a man. You don't need to wear a dress. The reason they suggest this is because during the test you'll need to undress the lower half of your body. During the test, your vulva will be covered by a drape, but some people feel exposed anyway. Baggy t-shirts or big jumpers are just as covering as a dress - wear what you feel comfortable in!
We would suggest that you probably shouldn't wear dungarees, rompers or jumpsuits to your cervical screening appointment though - anything where you have to get a bit naked in order to use the loo will also apply during your cervical screening!
You also do not need to shave or wax your vulva. The test works just fine with pubic hair, and the nurse sees tons of vulvas every day in every hairstyle imaginable. So just like regular life, what you do with your pubes is your business alone.
Once you're at the appointment, talk to the nurse about your preferences and feelings. You might have some adjustments to the test in mind, or you can work together to figure out a way of making the test most comfortable for you. Here's some things you could talk about...
If you've had a previous unpleasant cervical screening appointment talk to the nurse about it, and explain what made it unpleasant for you. They may be able to do something differently.
If there's any words for parts of your body that are off-limits for you for any reason, e.g. trauma or gender dysphoria, tell the nurse about the language you want used.
Some people like to know everything that's going on, and if you're one of those people, ask the nurse to narrate what they're doing.
Meanwhile, other people prefer to zone out entirely, put in headphones and watch something during the test. That's fine too! Cervical screening usually takes about five minutes, so bear that in mind when choosing something to watch. You're probably not going to blast through all of Pluribus.
If you have any health conditions which could make the test painful or severely uncomfortable for you, tell the nurse about this. This could be anything from gynaecological health conditions, to mental health, to back pain.
If you have a retroverted uterus (a tilted uterus), let the nurse know, as sometimes it makes your cervix harder to find. This natural variation is frequently only noticed during a first smear test, and you'll be told if you have it!
During the test, the default position is usually lying on your back, feet together, knees apart (or legs up in stirrups in some countries). However, this position doesn't work for everyone. You might have physical or emotional reasons why this isn't right for you. You can ask for an alternative position for your cervical screening, such as lying on your side.
The speculum is a part of the test that a lot of people find scary, painful or traumatic for many reasons. Again, there's adjustments that can be made to make the experience better for you.
Speculums come in lots of sizes. A lot of the time, medium is the default, but that's too big for some of us! You can request a smaller size of speculum.
You're also perfectly allowed to insert the speculum yourself if you'd like to take it at your own pace, or it helps you feel more in control of what's happening. If you're unsure as to how best to put it in, ask the nurse for guidance.
In the UK, plastic speculums tend to be used for cervical screening. In some countries, metal speculums are the default. These can feel cold, and you can ask to use a plastic speculum instead.
The test itself involves the nurse opening the speculum so they can see your cervix, then taking a sample of cells with a soft brush. This might feel weird, uncomfortable, or slightly painful. But it shouldn't feel seriously painful. If it does, please communicate this. It means that further adjustments need to be made for you, such as pain relief or specialist care. It might also point to a health condition that you didn't know you had, so it's important to make healthcare providers aware!
After the test is done, you might have slight bleeding or spotting, and may also feel cramping. This is because your cervix has just been interacted with, and sometimes it just does that. It's normal if it happens, and nothing to worry about, but contact a healthcare provider if the bleeding or pain is severe.
Some people might not be able to complete the test on a first attempt, and that's okay too. It's not a failure. You may have discovered further adjustments that you'll need for the test to be completed, and it's perfectly fine to re-book the test with the knowledge you've gained.
And once the test is all done, be proud of yourself! You've been part of the fight against cervical cancer, and have done something that could literally save your life. So treat yourself - you deserve it!
You will not necessarily be told if you have it. I know someone that went through 20 YEARS of annual excruciating PAP smears before someone told her. Once she found out, she told the docs and every appointment after that was minimally uncomfortable.
Lesson: if your PAP smear is really painful, ask if there is anything you should know that would make future exams better.
