in reply to tante • • •This absolutely reflected my experience and is why I turned off Copilot. The time it saved in typing obvious things was not offset by the time I wasted debugging subtle and hard-to-spot bugs that it introduced.
The most depressing thing was that it wasn't even good at things I'd expect a token predictor to be good at. Our coding conventions specify parameter orders that are consistent across subsystems. I expected that something parsing our code would be able to learn this and give subtle hints to enforce it (autocomplete functions and calls with the parameters in the right order). Instead, the autocompletions would randomly swap parameters at call sites and were completely inconsistent in naming things and parameter order for generated functions.
The one thing that it was useful for was identifying missing abstractions. If Copilot could fill in an entire function body, the APIs it was calling were missing an abstraction.
