:bc: Attention Beige Party-goers! :bc:

Polls are fixed! I've been getting reports since mid March about an issue with polls not recording all votes. After digging around in the database a bit I found that polls with more than four options would only record local votes. I submitted this as a bug in GitHub, but of course it turned out to be a result of me having no idea what I'm doing.

Around the same time this started happening, I moved the sidekiq processes off to their own server. On the web server I had increased the max poll options to allow more than four poll options, but I hadn't done it for the sidekiq server. The result being that we could create polls with more than four options through the UI, but sidekiq was only set to accept four options. Since sidekiq handles communication between instances, that meant that the local votes got recorded but remote votes got dropped.

I made the fix on the sidekiq server and created a new poll this morning with more than four options, and it is now correctly recording both local and remote votes.

You can read a more detailed explanation of what was going on here:

Thanks to those who kept bringing this issue to my attention. At first it was a hard bug to pin down, but once I was able to actually see it happening in the database I could at least ask enough dumb questions to point the finger right back at me.

As always, thank you for bearing with me, and Beige-bless :bb:

Semiconductor Simulator Lets Your Play IC Designer

For circuit simulation, we have always been enthralled with the Falstad simulator which is a simple, Spice-like simulator that runs in the browser. [Brandon] has a simulator, too, but it simulates semiconductor devices. With help from [Paul Falstad], that simulator also runs in the browser.

This simulator takes a little thinking and lets you build devices as you might on an IC die. The key is to use the dropdown that initially says “Interact” to select a tool. Then, the drop-down below lets you select what you are drawing, which can be a voltage source, metal, or various materials you find in semiconductor devices, like n-type or a dielectric.

It is a bit tricky, but if you check out the examples first (like this diode), it gets easier. The main page has many examples. You can even build up entire subsystems like a ring oscillator or a DRAM cell.

Designing at this level has its own quirks. For example, in the real world, you think of resistors as something you can use with great precision, and capacitors are often “sloppy.” On an IC substrate, resistors are often the sloppy component. While capacitor values might not be exact, it is very easy to get an extremely precise ratio of two capacitors because the plate size is tightly controlled. This leads to a different mindset than you are used to when designing with discrete components.

Of course, this is just a simulation, so everything can be perfect. If, for some reason, you don’t know about the Falstad simulator, check it out now.

Google to pay Texas nearly $1.4 billion over alleged data privacy violations

therecord.media/google-texas-p…

Another lawsuit settlement has struck Google. This time, the company is now liable for one of the largest payouts from a state-level consumer data protection legislation in the United States.

Google has agreed to pay Texas more than $1.37 billion to resolve two lawsuits involving its use of location data, biometrics and its Incognito search engine.

The payout far outstrips any other state settlements against the tech giant to date on claims involving data privacy.

Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Google in 2022, alleging the company illegally tracked and collected users’ private data, including their location, their voiceprints and faces and their searches in Incognito mode. The latter has been the subject of other lawsuits claiming the special search engine does not deliver the privacy it promises.

“In Texas, Big Tech is not above the law,” Paxton said in a statement, which accused Google of “secretly” tracking Texans’ data.

“This $1.375 billion settlement is a major win for Texans’ privacy and tells companies that they will pay for abusing our trust.”

A Google spokesperson noted that the settlement reached on Friday does not mandate new product changes and said the company has already made policy fixes which address the issues at the heart of the lawsuit.

The settlement also includes no admission of wrongdoing by Google, the spokesperson said.

Does this fix anything? Not really. Since Google has already changed much of its privacy policies since the original 2022 lawsuit, this settlement seems reactive at best.

No, Karoline. It’s ridiculous to suggest Donald Trump does anything other than for his own benefit.

100% this is bugged to hell. You wouldn't want to use it for normal business trips, let alone presidential trips. You'd have to be a moron to use it. Oh.

Not sure what this means: “50% of people can die if infected” Can doesn’t mean will, so the statement is kind of vague.

I mean how do you write about abundance without questions regarding intellectual property law (a central regulatory lever in scarcity vs. abundance) being key to your argument? This seemed clear to me when I heard one of the authors interviewed, and he was asked "but what about the housing bubble?"
in reply to Mike Masnick

And the answer was something along the lines of "well, that's not the abundance we mean." Which suggests no principled understanding of scarcity vs. abundance, and just a "we want abundance when it supports our priors."
