AI chatbot Grok can’t stop talking about 'white genocide', admits it's by design

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has been frequently bringing up the concept of a “white genocide” in South Africa - even in unrelated conversations - and has said its creators instructed it to treat the concept as both real and racially driven.

When faced with unrelated questions on issues such as enterprise software and building scaffolding, Grok offered false and misleading answers.

As demonstrated by many on X, Grok has been consistently steering conversations towards the controversial topic of an alleged “white genocide” in South Africa, regardless of the original question, highlighting a growing tendency to shift focus to this narrative tied to Musk’s country of origin.

President Zelenskyy after meeting Erdoğan in Ankara: “A good and productive meeting about peace and security. Thank you to President Erdoğan and Turkey for supporting real steps toward a full ceasefire and true diplomacy.

Russia again showed it’s not serious about ending the war by sending a weak delegation — a sign of disrespect to the world. We expect a strong response from our partners.

We also discussed security guarantees, ceasefire monitoring, demining, Ukraine’s recovery, and strengthening our partnership.”

Question for #Linux and #Economics peeps:

Do you think, assuming Flathub enables commercial apps in the future, it would be possible to make a living by developing commercial Open-Source desktop applications full-time?
(Assuming those apps can also work on systems like the #SteamDeck)

  • Yes, but only if you're lucky (48%, 29 votes)
  • Yes, but only without morals (dark patterns etc.) (11%, 7 votes)

FOSS = Free & Open Source Software.
How would you make money on FREE software, without going down the horrid ad revenue patch companies today use?
Now, do I believe that source available Software could rise within a licensed/patented monetary model. Yes I do think there is a better chance there.
Interested in feedback on these thoughts 😀
in reply to NotRoyal

@RoyalNotRoyals Oups. 😅
Yes, I indeed thought of OSS, without the F. Regarding ads, I'm definitely very much against it and would strongly avoid it. The lower limit here would be non-intrusive contextual ads (since they work without tracking), but only so much that a project is financially viable and not more. Given our current economical system it might not be possible to always avoid something like that. However any kind of tracking or abuse (selling) of telemetry data is an absolute no-go.
in reply to Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@RoyalNotRoyals I'm not that much into economics though, so if there's a way to avoid any kind of ads while making a living I'd 100% take it.
in reply to Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

me neither. But I really want open source software to become the standard, and have been thinking of how it could succeed a good bit this year. As even just OSS has the problem of being very easy to copy as the source code is out in the open for anyone to take and sell as repackaged as their own closed source rebranded software...
But I hope stuff like you poll here can get more thinkers and ideas out to improve things for OSS or similar 😊
in reply to Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

Yeah no worries 😊 I like that idea of the limit being no-tracking, even if some ads are needed to make it go around financially for the developers. I'd even like it if developers could even make a good earning on releasing their passion projects to everyone else. Many OSS programs are so well made.

@Ariantoser You got it the wrong way around, by now for userspace apps *not* using Flatpak or Snap means using some alternative. 😉

"John L. "When ChatGPT was released at the end of 2022, it caused a panic at all levels of education because it made cheating incredibly easy. Students who were asked to write a history paper or literary analysis could have the tool do it in mere seconds. Some schools banned it while others deployed A.I. detection services, despite concerns about their accuracy.

But, oh, how the tables have turned. Now students are complaining on sites like Rate My Professors about their instructors’ overreliance on A.I. and scrutinizing course materials for words ChatGPT tends to overuse, like “crucial” and “delve.” In addition to calling out hypocrisy, they make a financial argument: They are paying, often quite a lot, to be taught by humans, not an algorithm that they, too, could consult for free.

For their part, professors said they used A.I. chatbots as a tool to provide a better education. Instructors interviewed by The New York Times said chatbots saved time, helped them with overwhelming workloads and served as automated teaching assistants.

Their numbers are growing. In a national survey of more than 1,800 higher-education instructors last year, 18 percent described themselves as frequent users of generative A.I. tools; in a repeat survey this year, that percentage nearly doubled, according to Tyton Partners, the consulting group that conducted the research. The A.I. industry wants to help, and to profit: The start-ups OpenAI and Anthropic recently created enterprise versions of their chatbots designed for universities."

theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/m…. Everything Starmer comes out with on immigration just gets worse & worse & worse. This pathetic attempt to appeal to Reform UK voters will get him & his Party nowhere fast, @ChrisMayLA6, @HarriettMB!

theguardian.com/society/2025/m…. With all due respect to Esther Rantzen, she is wrong about this - profoundly wrong. SHE may want to commit suicide legally, but I don't, & neither do a lot of other disabled people - & we don't want to be pressured into doing so, not by anyone, @Peternimmo, @ChrisMayLA6. What is supposed to be "voluntary" euthanasia doesn't stay that way - as the Canadian experience demonstrates only too clearly.

but as they say, they cannot support it in its 'current form' - the issue is to find a form that allows protection against coercion, but is permissive for those with a reasonable desire to depart?
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

I think that's a lot easier to say than do. The devil is very much in the detail. The 1961 Suicide Act would have been amended long ago if it was a straightforward matter.
