Now you can have a discussion about the usefulness of AI for all kinds of stuff, but to me is is disgusting that Meta is deciding to feed their users this stuff. When it comes to social media, I would think that most people are interested in what their friends have to say or what people they follow have to say. AI generated content is not that.

Generative models are cute little toys with which you can play around, and sometimes they produce something nice that can be refined with a little manual tweaking. The real problem are all those idiots trying to produce click traps so they can make some money through advertising or data mining. Magazine editors thinking they can save money by using generated images instead of illustrations made by human illustrators are just annoying, and the illustrators are angry and scared, of course, but the real problem is that all the digital tools that have been made to classify, sort, and search digital content, become more and more useless because they can't tell relevant data from AI hallucinations. AI hallucinations can be nice, you can use those to create images that would have been hard to make otherwise, but the "better" image generators become, they more useless they get for making something really far out. Videos of people randomly morphing into one another, losing limbs, objects melting into people's bodies or growing out of them, man, those can be really trippy! Also, strange surreal scenes with rainbow coloured people with melting faces, I really like those. It's getting harder and harder to get anything decent like that out of current AI models. If you prefer cute mass-produced kitsch, you can have some of that rendered for you, but it gets boring very quickly. The real problem is that AI can generate spam that bypasses any spam filter, and it takes only a small number of spam operations to flood the entire Internet. The problem is not the existence of this technology but the world in which it exists. A world in which all kinds of idiots are desperately trying to make as much money as possible by any means. A world where giant corporations are trying to sell us all kinds of shit. A world where fascist bastards and religious nutters are trying to flood the media with their propaganda.

Ich bin da zwiegespalten. Mastodon ist ja "nur" eine Zugangssoftware zum Fediverse, so wie etwa Firefox eine Zugangssoftware zum WWW ist. Insofern wünsche ich mir eher für das Fediverse den Status eines immateriellen Kulturgutes als für Mastodon den eines Digital Public Good.
@rainer Wenn Du das Fediverse (also ActivityPub) auf der Liste sehen möchtest, suche Dir ein paar Leute und setze das um. Wenn Du an der einen oder anderen Stelle ein wenig Unterstützung brauchst kannst Du auf uns zählen (und sicher viele andere auch).
