Many folks have asked us about auto-bridging Bluesky like @aphyr has, and it's a good question!
There's two reasons for not flipping that switch: 1. Costs! Bsky has a huge userbase, and Bridgy Fed / @anewsocial is currently mostly self-funded with some community support (ty!). 2. Bsky is what we'd consider a "very large" instance, so turning it on overnight is not the right strategy; maybe for new users, but we'd want Bluesky to add a "loud" explanation of interop w/ ActivityPub, along with an on-app switch to point to before that. The team there is very open to bridging, but we also need to ensure that users are educated AND we have the tools on both Bridgy Fed's settings page and Bluesky before kicking that off. (2/3 🧵)

@luca Those requests should be arriving over Bsky DMs, but I believe the default setting on those is "Following/Followers Only". They recently added an DM invite section to surface others without clogging peoples inboxes, so *hopefully* our msgs have reached since. We'll bring this up with the Bsky team next time we chat, but I don't think it would be appropriate for us to get a bypass on user settings if that's the case, so perhaps a different flow would make more sense. seems like something bluesky and threads should do themselves, and just put up a warning when their users are about to see something off network. let users customize the warning to never show again or every time etc. I seem to recall AOL did this with the web early on.
It's less about seeing off-network content, more about exposing their content off-network. Unbridged users can still see bridged content, it's just that their interactions with that content won't natively show up on the other side.
