I missed the submission deadlines for the Poor Debanked PlanetWreckers Bill and the Anti-Wellbeing Bill. But even once they close, it's not too late to email all the party leaders using their Parliamentary email address. Which also puts your views on the public record, and keeps our total opposition to this casual coup live in their minds.

Links to those bills here, along with the text of my submission on the Deregulatory Standards Bill;

#Boston Election Department switching over fully to electronic poll-books; I hope they know what they’re doing!

Using electronic poll-books at 275 precincts on election day is a much heavier lift than using them at ten early-voting locations. I hope they've covered all their bases!

Wow. As someone who is also a poll worker and gets very grumpy with the paper books, this nonetheless seems like potentially a really large issue, I'm curious to hear what you find out at your training.
in reply to Jessamyn

@jessamyn I can tell you this much: there have *absolutely* been horror stories in the news about electronic poll-books in various jurisdictions failing on election day and making people unable to vote.
The fact of the matter is, barring fire or flood, it's essentially impossible for paper poll-books to "fail". The same absolutely cannot be said for electronic poll-books.
We'll see what they say at the training!
in reply to Jonathan Kamens 86 47

I attended #Boston #PollWorker training today, and after hearing what they have to say about the new electronic poll books, I am much less worried that they could prevent people from voting or allow people to vote who shouldn't. I do, however, have some remaining concerns. See my new write-up at blog.kamens.us/2025/07/21/city… .

Well. Half-frame is popular. So, here is another one, this time from Eric Woods. He did a review of Kentmere 200, but in this article talks about his Rollei 35 LED half-frame camera. #believeinfilm #analogphotography

Generated Summary:

Main Topic: The AI race between the US and China, focusing on the potential for Chinese open-source AI models like Deepseek to surpass US closed models like OpenAI.

Key Points:

  • AI Arms Race: The discussion highlights the view that the US and China are in an AI arms race, with significant implications for global dominance.
  • Deepseek Ban: There's concern about a potential US ban on Chinese AI models like Deepseek, similar to the TikTok ban, driven by Silicon Valley lobbying.
  • Open Source vs. Closed Models: The advantages of open-source AI models are emphasized, including cost-effectiveness, the ability to run locally without sending data to external servers, and customization to remove censorship.
  • OpenAI's Limitations: Concerns are raised about OpenAI's reliability (downtime) and data privacy practices, making open-source alternatives more appealing for certain applications.
  • Global Adoption: It's argued that countries and companies outside the US may prefer Chinese open-source AI due to cost, control, and the ability to tailor the models to their specific needs and cultures.
  • Economic Implications: Restricting access to open-source AI models in the US could put American companies at a disadvantage compared to their global competitors.
  • AI Hype and Investment: The discussion touches on the current AI hype and whether the downstream is paying for AI right now.

Highlights:

  • The potential for a bifurcated world with US AI and Chinese AI dominating different regions.
  • The observation that Deepseek's release wiped out $1.5 trillion off the US stock market in a single day.
  • The point that open-source models allow users to avoid sending data to OpenAI and customize the model to remove unwanted censorship.
  • The suggestion that the US political landscape is influenced by Silicon Valley's financial contributions.
