In-house service is provided directly by the OEM. This can be either at a physical location or through mail-in service.
Apple, for example, provides in-house service through Genius Bars.
Authorized service providers work directly with OEMs to provide repair services. This can also be in-person or mail-in service.
Google partners with uBreakiFix to expand their reach while staying involved in the repair process.
Independent service providers don’t work with OEMs (besides possibly ordering parts or tools). Instead, they rely on experience and publicly available resources to offer repair services.
For many people, ISPs can be cheaper and more convenient.
Self-repair means having the parts, tools, and instructions you need to fix stuff yourself.
HP and other OEMs work with iFixit to write repair guides and sell complete Fix Kits.
This is usually the cheapest, most convenient, and most secure way to get something fixed.
