The image shows a Sudoku puzzle displayed on a mobile device screen. The puzzle is a 9x9 grid with numbers ranging from 1 to 9. Some cells contain pre-filled numbers in blue, while others are empty. The numbers 6, 4, 8, 7, 9, 5, 1, 3, and 2 are in the first row, and 1, 5, 3, 2, 6, 4, 9, 8, and 7 are in the second row. The third row contains 2, 7, 9, 7, 9, 1, 8, 3, and 3. The fourth row has 7, 6, 6, 5, 4, 2, 8, 1, and 3. The fifth row shows 8, 3, 4, 1, 7, 9, 2, 6, and 5. The sixth row contains 5, 2, 1, 3, 8, 6, 7, 4, and 9. The seventh row has 4, 7, 6, 6, 9, 3, 8, 5, and 2. The eighth row shows 9, 8, 2, 4, 5, 1, 3, 7, and 6. The ninth row contains 3, 1, 5, 6, 2, 7, 4, and 9. The number 8 is highlighted in the bottom right corner of the grid. Below the grid, there are buttons for numbers 1 through 9, and a pencil icon for erasing. The top of the screen shows the time as 09:48, with a 5G signal, full battery, and a timer set to 11:40.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin calls U.N. ‘transparently antisemitic’ after report on tech firms and Gaza

His comments came in response to a U.N. report released last month that alleged technology firms including Google and its parent company Alphabet had profited from “the genocide carried out by Israel” in Gaza by providing cloud and AI technologies to the Israeli government and military.

“With all due respect, throwing around the term genocide in relation to Gaza is deeply offensive to many Jewish people who have suffered actual genocides. I would also be careful citing transparently antisemitic organizations like the UN in relation to these issues,” Brin wrote in a forum for staff at Google DeepMind, the company’s artificial intelligence division, where workers were debating the report, according to the screenshots.

I tried OrganicMaps, but it was noticeably less usable than Google Maps.

When you actually need maps on mobile, UX issues and jank becomes extremely annoying.

CoMaps works better than OrganicMaps for me. And there is an app called Geo Share than can transform links from GMaps to CoMaps.

Reminds me of seeing once a bread knife for 2400€ on offer at KaDeWe in Berlin. You can still buy quite a lot of bread for that price. But then it was made out of Damascus steel... 🙂

"I deleted my second brain" by Joan Westenberg is very worth reading. I am on a similar path right now, removing a lot of digital cruft and structures I had applied to my life in the belief that I could gain more control.

@konrad Yes, using the tool without an appropriate why (that is, something more elaborate than "I want a second brain") is just a cargo cult. No?

When it comes to note-taking especially, I see a lot of people try and take notes on every little thing that they read, but IMHO that just leads to clutter and mixed information when one goes back to review. My personal approach is to really only take and connect notes on a second/third pass of a source, so I have a more grounded idea of what the ideas are when I note that down. That way when my ideas evolve and I go back and revise I at least have a good understanding of where I was.

One big issue I see is people saying that by taking notes down immediately (often without reading ahead, even) you have a snapshot of your state of mind at the time so you can have a "conversation with yourself", but (again IMO) if that past state of mind is full of missing context and incomplete ideas, that conversation is going to be less than useful.

TLDR: Saving every thought saves no thoughts

Programming Like It’s 1986, For Fun and Zero Profit

screenshot of C programming on Macintosh Plus

Some people slander retrocomputing as an old man’s game, just because most of those involved are more ancient than the hardware they’re playing with. But there are veritable children involved too — take the [ComputerSmith], who isrecreating Conway’s game of life on a Macintosh Plus that could very well be as old as his parents. If there’s any nostalgia here, it’s at least a generation removed — thus proving for the haters that there’s more than a misplaced desire to relive one’s youth in exploring these ancient machines.

So what does a young person get out of programming on a 1980s Mac? Well, aside from internet clout, and possible YouTube monetization, there’s the sheer intellectual challenge of the thing. You cant go sniffing around StackExchange or LLMs for code to copy-paste when writing C for a 1986 machine, not if you’re going to be fully authentic. ANSI C only dates to 1987, after all, and figuring out the quirks and foibles of the specific C implementation is both half the fun, and not easily outsourced. Object Pascal would also have been an option (and quite likely more straightforward — at least the language was clearly-defined), but [ComputerSmith] seems to think the exercise will improve his chops with C, and he’s likely to be right.

Apparently [ComputerSmith] brought this project to VCS Southwest, so anyone who was there doesn’t have to wait for Part 2 of the video to show up to see how this turns out, or to snag a copy of the code (which was apparently available on diskette). If you were there, let us know if you spotted the youngest Macintosh Plus programmer, and if you scored a disk from him.

If the idea of coding in this era tickles the dopamine receptors, check out thishow-to for a prizewinning Amiga demo. If you think pre-ANSI C isn’t retro enough, perhaps you’dprefer programming by card?
