My favourite titbit though is that the SNCF makes use of its capital stock so dreadfully that just opening local train contracts up to competition can reduce costs per km by 30% - almost down to German levels

"Opening up to competition can also help reduce the operating costs of transport services. In the case of rail, opening up freely organized and contracted services to competition would, according to the Transport Regulatory Authority (ART), significantly reduce operating costs for contracted transport, which would lead to an increase in supply with identical funding. According to the ART, in Hauts-de-France, the "Étoile d'Amiens" package shows a 20% decrease in operating costs for a 9.5% increase in supply, and similar decreases are expected in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Pays de la Loire. Nationally, a 30% reduction in operating costs would represent €1.2 billion in savings, enough to finance up to 40% more train-km at a constant budget. Furthermore, the arrival of new entrants on freely organized services will optimize train traffic, and therefore generate additional toll revenue for SNCF Réseau and an increase in resources to finance rail infrastructure."

I love this: «higher property tax in areas with good public transport».

Finland (or mostly #Helsinki) does this indirectly, by preserving public ownership of land even when it's built. People who buy homes in areas of the city which get more valuable thanks to public infrastructure, including public transport, eventually have to pay higher rent (or property taxes) for the land their building uses.

@nemobis yeah, it seems better than the versement mobilité which assumes the people who benefit most from public transport are the people who work in cities

changes to the taxe foncière would make sure e.g. people with a pied à terre in central Paris pay their fair share too
