The real tragedy of the UK is that it WAS like that - before the 1980s and Thatcherism. My childhood, education and start of working life were in the 60s-70s, and I well remember both the practicalities of state support and that feeling that you could take a risk, and if it went wrong the state would be there to pick you up.
Of course that's still true in the UK - for the wealthy. I often feel this internalised aspect of class difference is underestimated. Class difference is not about accents, or cultures - but it is about having choices. The privileged have choice - and for a time between the war and Thatcher UK working people had it too. My family was poor, but state support enabled me to choose university, start my own business, go traveling, etc - freedoms that are now denied to ordinary Brits by the psychological pressure that if it doesn't work out, you're on your own.
* 'Outside Britain' here means in the EU - definitely not the US.

in reply to GeofCox • • •If a UK citizen needs the police for most matters, they are given a crime reference number & no further investigation or help. I've seen this firsthand or from close friends/family several times - burglaries/theft, even violent robbery, mental health crises needing an assessment - even once a boy being abused by his parents, who was forced out into the rain in underwear & hid in a garden - the police eventually came & simply returned him home with no ongoing support.

in reply to NKT • • •I do wish the media would report the wider policing context when they report things like hundreds of arrests of people harmlessly holding up pieces of cardboard with 'I support Palestine Action' on them - like the fact that almost all real crime in the UK is left unresolved - detection and charge rates are literally between 1 and 5% for many serious crimes.

Has the numbers of cops gone down (doubt it)? If not, has the number of crimes gone up, by a factor of 10-50? If no to both, what on Earth are all those cops doing in their working hours?
