Public libraries really ought to be better funded, but they aren’t going to be, and so it seems that for the time being stochastic piracy is going to be the only reliable means of preserving humanity’s collective cultural output for posterity.
Many forms of media require the life’s work of hundreds, if not thousands, of people to produce, but many rights holders would rather see than work become unavailable to anyone, rather than put their parasitic rentseeking profiteering in jeopardy.

The image depicts a street scene with a rainbow visible in the sky. In the foreground, there are two cars driving on the road: a black car on the left and a white car on the right. The background features a row of buildings, with a prominent black building labeled "CYCLEBAR" in white letters. The windows of the CYCLEBAR are red with the text "ROCK YOUR RIDE" visible. To the left, there is a white building with the word "car" partially visible. The sky is overcast, and the trees in the image are bare, suggesting a winter or early spring setting. A street sign is visible, indicating a parking area. The rainbow is faint but noticeable, arching across the sky behind the buildings.

i had to take my old mac pro desktop to the genius bar to get a repair on the disk controller. since that was the boot disk, we had to boot it up with an external disk.
the genius bar person didn't know how to do any form of low level diags or repairs, so i walked him patiently through how to throw up a terminal window, fire up fsck so we could see the failures.
genius bar: "wow. you know that terminal window stuff. cool!"
shortly thereafter:
genius bar: "yup. you're right. on board disk controller bad. we'll have to order a new mother board. you do have full external backups, so you're OK."
genius bar manager: "don't suppose you need a job? we pay $18/hr" (this was in 2007...)
me: "nah, i'm good. just email me when the board comes in."
still offends me when folks with almost no training and making barely more than mcdonald's cashier wages get called "guru" or "genius" by the employer so screwing them.

Hmmm.... if you don't believe 'soft power' to be a thing, say off you're a President whose entire modus operandi is transactional, then why would you keep funding the Voice of America.....
Its a strange (ad more extreme echo) of the British state's inability to foster the BBC World Service (in its various guises).

I watch&read a lot but avoid BBC content because I don't pay the BBC license fee and I don't want to give hypothetical ammo to the license collectors who send their harassment letters throughout the country. Not a great position for even domestic influence.
It seems UK's political opponents supply their "news" for free and put no barriers.

We need to stop the US corn subsidies. Everything comes back to corn!
Why is German butter yellow?
→ Why isn't US butter yellow?
→ Beta carotene in cow diets turn their milk fat yellow
→ And German cows eat primarily grass, while US cow diets are mostly grain and corn
@SwiftOnSecurity was right, everything is made of corn

I upgraded to a Pixel 10 Pro because the promos made it super cheap for me—and honestly, Pixelsnap (Qi2/MagSafe) without a case is the only “new feature” I care about.
I disable all the AI features I can on my Google Account, so none of that new stuff interests me, but there *are* a handful of new things I’ve noticed but seen literally nobody mention in “reviews” or sales pages. I’ll compile them here in this thread for anyone interested.

Yep, this is what I have been saying. The way to defeat the flag-shaggers is not to spend hours ripping down the flags or getting court injunctions.

IP protections are out of control in the modern era, and need to be drastically curtailed for the good of humanity.

in reply to Gemma ⭐️🔰🇺🇸 🇵🇭 🎐 • • •We, as a species, clearly cannot rely on the goodwill of those who own and operate cloud data storage centers, much less private library operators like Elsevier, etc, so distributed networks of small nodes are really the only reliable way of preserving our knowledge.
And if that constitutes “piracy”, well, I’m ok with that, because the alternative is a new Dark Ages, and effectively perpetual or terminal copyright has no moral legitimacy .The benefits vastly outweigh the risks or the qualms.
