i had to take my old mac pro desktop to the genius bar to get a repair on the disk controller. since that was the boot disk, we had to boot it up with an external disk.
the genius bar person didn't know how to do any form of low level diags or repairs, so i walked him patiently through how to throw up a terminal window, fire up fsck so we could see the failures.
genius bar: "wow. you know that terminal window stuff. cool!"
shortly thereafter:
genius bar: "yup. you're right. on board disk controller bad. we'll have to order a new mother board. you do have full external backups, so you're OK."
genius bar manager: "don't suppose you need a job? we pay $18/hr" (this was in 2007...)
me: "nah, i'm good. just email me when the board comes in."
still offends me when folks with almost no training and making barely more than mcdonald's cashier wages get called "guru" or "genius" by the employer so screwing them.
I accomplished something today so now I get to chill for the rest of Holiday Weekend

I watch&read a lot but avoid BBC content because I don't pay the BBC license fee and I don't want to give hypothetical ammo to the license collectors who send their harassment letters throughout the country. Not a great position for even domestic influence.

And if that constitutes “piracy”, well, I’m ok with that, because the alternative is a new Dark Ages, and effectively perpetual or terminal copyright has no moral legitimacy .The benefits vastly outweigh the risks or the qualms.
