This is an old cedar plank, used long ago to grill salmon on. I found it under the deck with these strange scallops out of the wood and "fiber” cocoon looking things. Even after all of the horror movies I watched as a kid I still leaned close and peeled one up to look inside. Maybe a beetle, but first impression was more of a large, annoyed wasp like thing that I quickly covered back up.

There's some important points here, although I do believe that workers' pension funds should direct their investments keeping in mind workers' welfare and interests

Pretty happy with today's result for procedural map: large central island + smaller ones, nice gentle shores, steep cliffs, hills, medium mountains, and huge snow-capped mountains 🥰

Water is temporary ofc, just to give some idea. I don't have actual water implemented yet 😅

And ofc stuff like forests, biomes, etc will happen, but not right now.

Btw, the main island is ~50km in length.

The heightmap is based on just several layers of fractal perlin noise. Mountains are fractal ridged noise (= 1 - abs(2 * perlin() - 1)).

All computed with automatic derivatives using dual numbers, which I use to place stone/grass, etc.

The image shows a screenshot of a Wikipedia page about "Automatic quartz," a type of watch movement. At the top, there is a search bar with the text "Search Wikipedia" and a number "15" indicating the number of search results. Below the search bar, there is a close-up image of a watch back, showing the internal components labeled "Pinion," "Gear," and "Pendulum." The watch is made of stainless steel, as indicated by the text "Stainless Steel" on the back. The Wikipedia article explains that automatic quartz movements combine a self-winding rotor mechanism with a piezoelectric quartz crystal to generate electricity, aiming to provide the advantages of quartz without the inconvenience and environmental impact of batteries. The article mentions that several manufacturers employ this technique. At the bottom of the screen, there are navigation options including "Save," "Language," "Find in article," "Theme," and "Contents."

For the record, you do not need to convince me that #Hamas and Hamas supporters have bad intentions. I already know that.

You need to convince me that the government of #Israel has _good_ intentions.

in reply to Jürgen Hubert

After Oct 7, the Israelis stopped listening to anyone on the subject of Hamas.

I don't need convincing that Israel has behaved abominably. There's a bit of Genesis 4: The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.

We would like to get past the Hamas death cult and get on to the Israeli genocide - but the Israelis stopped caring on Oct 7. Hamas oppresses the Palestinians, too.

“ #Socrates said, “The misuse of language induces evil in the soul.” He wasn’t talking about grammar. To misuse language is to use it the way politicians and advertisers do, for profit, without taking responsibility for what the words mean. Language used as a means to get power or make money goes wrong: it lies. Language used as an end in itself, to sing a poem or tell a story, goes right, goes towards the truth. A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper.”
~ Ursula K. Le Guin

grammar(n.)

late 14c., "Latin grammar, rules of Latin," from Old French gramaire "grammar; learning," especially Latin and philology, also "(magic) incantation, spells,

mumbo-jumbo" (12c., Modern French grammaire), an "irregular semi-popular adoption" [OED, 2nd ed. 1989] of Latin grammatica "grammar, philology," perhaps via an unrecorded Medieval Latin form *grammaria.

The classical Latin word is from Greek grammatike (tekhnē) "(art) of letters," referring both to philology and to literature in the broadest sense, fem. of grammatikos (adj.) "pertaining to or versed in letters or learning," from gramma "letter" (see -gram). An Old English gloss of it was stæfcræft (see staff (n.)).

A much broader word in Latin and Greek; restriction of the meaning to "systematic account of the rules and usages of language" is a post-classical development.

Until 16c. limited to Latin; in reference to English usage by late 16c., thence "rules of a language to which speakers and writers must conform" (1580s). The meaning "a treatise on grammar" is from 1520s.

For the "magic" sense, compare gramary. The evolution is characteristic of the Dark Ages: "learning in general, knowledge peculiar to the learned classes," which included astrology and magic; hence the secondary meaning of "occult knowledge" (late 15c. in English), which evolved in Scottish into glamour (q.v.).

A grammar-school (late 14c.) originally was a school for learning Latin, which was begun by memorizing the grammar. In U.S. (1842) the term was put to use in the graded system for a school between primary and secondary where English grammar is one of the subjects taught.

The word is attested earlier in surnames (late 12c.) such as Robertus Gramaticus, Richard le Gramarie, whence the modern surname Grammer.
