Formally, this change affects only certified devices, but in practice - no one is going to build apps just for custom ROMs. This is a system-wide shift. A forced one ⚠️
And it's just one sign of a bigger issue.
For months, " title=""/> hasn't published the 
Android 16 drivers for Pixel devices - something that used to be standard. No official reason. No communication. Just closed doors 🚪 This is a clear limitation of access and a lack of transparency for users and developers alike. Actions like this damage the trust that used to be the foundation 
@GrapheneOS - a project built around 🔐 privacy, 🛡️ security, and 🌐 independence - has relied on Pixels as the base hardware for years. But today, they say it clearly: we don't want to be completely dependent on one company. That's why they've started working with another manufacturer, so they can support new devices in the future. Pixels will still be supported, but the future doesn't look as certain as it once did.
On top of that, Android's development process has already changed. The source code now lands in AOSP only after the official release - and not as a full repo with commits, but as a snapshot 📸 This practically eliminates the ability to track changes in real time or take part in the process.
And what about AOSP itself - what's left of open Android? I tested it myself, installing an unofficial build on a 
Raspberry Pi. It works surprisingly well, but it's instantly clear how many components have been stripped out. So many features, services, and systems could be open - but " title=""/> simply doesn't include them. AOSP is now just a base - and without more, you can't build a real alternative.
So what's next? Is it time for

I don't think so - not yet Android - despite being more and more centralized - still offers a level of 🛡️ security that Linux in its basic form can't match. But if this trend continues, if control keeps growing at the cost of openness, we'll have to seriously consider that path sooner or later.
