🇺🇸 The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a semi-aquatic rodent native to North America but now also widespread in wetlands across Europe. It measures around 40 to 60 centimeters in length including the tail and weighs between 1 and 2 kilograms. Muskrats are excellent swimmers, using their flattened tails and webbed hind feet to navigate through water. They build dome-shaped lodges out of vegetation near the edges of ponds and rivers. Active mostly at dusk and night, muskrats feed on aquatic plants, roots, and sometimes small aquatic animals. Despite being shy and often hidden, they play an important role in wetland ecosystems by helping to shape the landscape through their digging and feeding habits.
🇩🇪 Der Bisam (Ondatra zibethicus) ist ein wassernaher Nagetierbewohner, der ursprünglich aus Nordamerika stammt, inzwischen aber auch in europäischen Feuchtgebieten weit verbreitet ist. Er wird etwa 40 bis 60 cm lang (inklusive Schwanz) und wiegt zwischen 1 und 2 Kilogramm. Mit seinem seitlich abgeflachten Schwanz und den teilweise behaarten Schwimmfüßen ist der Bisam ein ausgezeichneter Schwimmer. Er baut kugelförmige Nester aus Pflanzenmaterial an Uferbereichen von Flüssen und Teichen. Meist in der Dämmerung oder nachts aktiv, ernährt er sich hauptsächlich von Wasserpflanzen, Wurzeln und gelegentlich kleinen Wassertieren. Trotz seiner scheuen Lebensweise ist der Bisam ein wichtiger Bestandteil unserer Feuchtgebietslandschaften.
