🇺🇸 The muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a semi-aquatic rodent native to North America but now also widespread in wetlands across Europe. It measures around 40 to 60 centimeters in length including the tail and weighs between 1 and 2 kilograms. Muskrats are excellent swimmers, using their flattened tails and webbed hind feet to navigate through water. They build dome-shaped lodges out of vegetation near the edges of ponds and rivers. Active mostly at dusk and night, muskrats feed on aquatic plants, roots, and sometimes small aquatic animals. Despite being shy and often hidden, they play an important role in wetland ecosystems by helping to shape the landscape through their digging and feeding habits.
🇩🇪 Der Bisam (Ondatra zibethicus) ist ein wassernaher Nagetierbewohner, der ursprünglich aus Nordamerika stammt, inzwischen aber auch in europäischen Feuchtgebieten weit verbreitet ist. People start pre-ordering when an artist has proven themselves capable of releasing content that appeals to their fans reliably over time.
If I wanted people to pre-order my first album, no one's going to do that because who knows if it will be good? And a lot of bands don't get past that first album or even beyond one good song.

The other arrangement I refer to as a "pre-sale'.
However, I think you are asking which arrangement is better.
When I was still shopping on Amazon, I would stick "pre-order" items on my "Wishlist", so I could reconsider them when they were actually released. I did NOT want unexpected charges hitting my bank account for cash flow reasons (if my account got overdrawn, that could be really expensive in bank fees).
Payment in advance is better, but you can also get burned if the release is delayed or canceled.
Third option is like the wishlist -- let me sign up for notification on release so I can decide whether I can afford it then (or maybe delay to payday, etc).
This is from a customer perspective, of course.
As a producer, getting money up front can make it easier to make the release on time. But it's also kind of terrible if you have executive dysfunction issues (and quite a lot of artists do).

For this artist, receiving funds on release day is fine. But if my financial resources were tightly constrained I might vote the other way. The release process incurs a number of one-off expenses.

From experience, I can say I personally wouldn't like to get money before the thing is complete. It's because I find it hard to predict how long recordings will take, and taking money before it's done would feel like pressure, like I'm letting people down if there's a delay. But for some people, having the money up front might be what makes it possible to do the work.

As an artist and for my label, all the work is done and paid for when pre-orders start, that period is more about drumming up interest and the money from pre-orders can either help fund additional promo for the release, or for the label, its cut can go towards the next release.
I can only imaging waiting till release day being useful if you are doing it kickstarter style?
