Public Service Internet monthly newsletter (Sept 2025)

We live in incredible times with such possibilities that is clear. Although its easily dismissed seeing how we are being watched, wishing people will stop sharing pictures with ChatGPT and people in the UK told to delete emails In order to save water?

To quote Buckminster Fuller "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."

I don't know whether you saw my recent FrOSCon talk btw - I did not utter the words "public service internet" but it was very much your ball park. andypiper.co.uk/2025/08/22/tal…

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure and honour of delivering a keynote at the (milestone!) 20th edition of FrOSCon in Sankt Augustin, Germany.

My colleague David (one of the core developers on the Mastodon team) was one of the original founders of FrOSCon all the way back when it started, and the event is held near his home location, so it was a doubly wonderful opportunity for me to see him in person, and also to meet his family!
The FrOSCon 20th anniversary artwork
The last time I was in Bonn was in 1988, back then on a school trip exploring the Rhineland, in what used to be known as West Germany.

aside: I remember two things about that visit very distinctly – firstly, being in a group of youngsters that was closely tailed by security staff around a department store in Bonn, no doubt because shenanigans were afoot by some of my contemporaries (!); secondly, I had been given a Kodak disc film camera for a recent birthday, and the film shift mechanism broke during the trip, although one of my teachers tried to help me find a shop that could get it fixed, to no avail for such a niche device!

There have been many changes as a result of German re-unification and the compensation agreement between Berlin and Bonn,Vereinbarung über die Ausgleichsmaßnahmen für die Region Bonn. The university that hosts FrOSCon – Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences – is one of the institutions to have emerged as a result. The Open Source community is very fortunate to have such a wonderful venue to convene!

My talk was the keynote on the second day of the event. Due to unexpected circumstances I was only able to travel early on the Saturday and missed the opening of the event, but I arrived in time to see the huge interest in the keynote for day one: Daniel Stenberg of curl fame, talking about AI Slop Attacks on his development process. That was a fantastic talk, and I felt like it was a tough act to follow!

I spoke about the importance of federated, decentralised systems as a way to preserve access to information and to enable digital sovereignty.

I spoke about the creativity of humans, and our remarkable ingenuity in building the world in which we live.

We find ourselves in difficult places politically, economically, socially right now: but, there is room for hope.

Of course, I also mentioned how Mastodon and the Fediverse are important parts of the digital ecosystem as we work to build an alternative, better, social web for everyone.

The excellent folks from the Chaos Computer Club video operations team did a great job at capturing all of the talks from FrOSCon – you can watch my talk on their site, I’ll embed a YouTube version below here for some level of convenience for those who use that platform.

youtube.com/watch?v=ApLjFlCuOG…

While I’m on the subject of the Fediverse, digital sovereignty, and FrOSCon, I’ll also point out some related talks of interest: Frank Karlitschek spoke about digital sovereignty; my colleague, David, spoke about Taking a Fresh Look at the Fediverse (updates in Mastodon, and in other projects across the ecosystem); and Georg Lukas spoke about reverse-engineering Samsung wifi cameras to post photos to Mastodon, which was a fun technical talk.

I am very grateful to the organisers, volunteers, hosts, and the Open Source community for the opportunity to re-visit this part of Germany after such a long time away. I was home again by 11pm on Sunday, exhausted but happy. Thank you for making my time with you so enjoyable!
David’s family #Plushtodon, “Masti”, had a fun time at FrOSCon!

Is there a more Glaswegian set of footwear anywhere in existence? Created by Scottish pop artist Edmund Smith for the comedian Billy Connolly, they made their first appearance at the Aberdeen Music Hall in August 1975 making them 50 years old this year, and they soon became an iconic part of Billy's stage persona. They're now housed in the collections of the Glasgow Museums.

Just 9,000 years ago Britain was connected to continental Europe by an area of land called Doggerland, which is now submerged beneath the southern North Sea. Part of the reason why the UK is a world leader in off-shore windfarms.

oh wow 😮 i had no idea about this

"#Doggerland was named after the Dogger Bank (after 17th-century Dutch fishing boats called doggers), which formed a highland region that became submerged later than the rest of Doggerland.

The archaeological interest intensified in 1931 when a fishing trawler dragged up a barbed antler point that was subsequently dated to a time when the area was tundra. Vessels have since dragged up remains of mammoths, lions and other animals, and a few prehistoric tools and weapons. Most #archaeological evidence of human habitation dates to the #Mesolithic period during the early #Holocene."

There's a fascinating alternate history novel trilogy by Stephen Baxter where people are trying to prevent Doggerland (renamed "Northland" in the novels) from getting flooded after the ice age. The first book is called "Stone Spring" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Sp… - followed by "Bronze Summer" and "Iron Winter".

Should #Russia neighbours trust its “security guarantees” and “non-aggression” promises? Well, let’s look at the history of these…

On 13 October 1923 a massive explosion rocked Warsaw when its Citadel, hosting garrison and ammunition depot was blown up, killing 200 people.[^1] The perpetrators were local members of the Communist Party of Poland, closely related to the Bolshevik movement.

Poland was plagued by sabotage, explosions and assassinations for the next 20 years. Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), the predecessor of USSR, denied any involvement, and no hard evidence was ever presented - Polish state was practically rebuilt from scratch in 1919 and the forensic methods existing back then left much to be desired.

But in 1929 Moscow decided to recall a Soviet diplomat in Europe, Georgy Besedovsky. Back then, “recall” meant almost certain execution so he made a quick decision and simply defected to the West. Shortly after his memoirs were published in France, where Besedovsky - working as Soviet diplomat in Poland for most of 1920’s - documented a long sequence of assassinations, sabotage, infiltration, espionage etc conducted by Soviet GRU in Poland. For example, in 1924 Besedovsky wrote[^2]:

Immediately on his arrival in Warsaw, Orlovsky set out to clean the Augean stables inherited from his predecessor. This was hard work indeed. The fireproof safes in secret rooms were chock-full of explosives, bombs, hand grenades. Somewhere in the legation attics there were several containers with poisonous gases hidden there—for an unknown purpose—still at the time of [Mechislav] Loganovsky. This inheritance had to be disposed of as soon as possible and Orlovsky did the job indeed. Most of the explosives were sent back to Berlin, to the GRU headquarters for Europe (Glavnoye Politicheskoye Upravlenye) headed by one Michał Gorb; the rest was sunk in the Vistula from a motor boat purchased by Voykov.

For reference, here’s the first point of the Riga Treaty, signed by RSFSR after it failed its invasion on Poland in 1920:

The Russian Socialist Federative Republic and the Ukrainian Socialist Republic unreservedly recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Poland and solemnly confirm the unconditional right of the Polish people to organise their lives and establish forms of state power as they see fit.

I looked at which dates The Slits were active, and only found one Thursday June 11th fitting the time frame.
Maybe I should apply for archivist at Nijmegen. Lovely city.
in reply to Hamster Huey

@hamsterhuey in fairness to this and other archives, I'm sure their digitisation projects often rely on interns or part-time admin staff, not professional archivists, under pressure to scan and upload large quantities of items.

Maybe not in this case, but often the physical materials were likely collected decades ago and have sat in folders/boxes without any indexing of individual items, and at a time when easy googling for date/place clues wasn't an option.
