I did not want to run today. I needed to do SOMETHING physical outdoors but really I wanted to sit on the sofa and read my book. I could feel myself on the verge of slipping into one of my phases where I give up on exercise.

So I put on my running gear and told myself I only had to move for 20 minutes, and I could walk, power walk, jog, run, whatever, as long as I kept moving.

I managed 7 minutes of brisk walking, then 22 minutes of running, another 4 minutes of walking, then another 7 minutes of running. 4.27k all together. It will take me a while to get back on top form after being sick.

When I get back from holiday I will have 7 weeks to train properly for my 5k race in November. To help me, I have signed up to run 62 miles (that’s 100km) during October. My aim is to raise at least £200 for the Stroke Association, which helped my dad when he had his stroke and lost a significant portion of his vision. He sits as an expert by experience on their funding panel, trying to decide which research projects the charity should support, and I fundraise.

If you’d like to support me, you can do so here: justgiving.com/fundraising/Cha…

If you’re not about to donate, I’d really appreciate it if you could boost this toot.

*Earth Wind & Fires September starts playing in the background*

Had a nice exploratory 10km bike ride to check the status of several bike paths that are more relevant to us these days. Haven't been on some of them in years so it was nice to see how they have been reconfigured a bit.

(A few hyper local comments to follow)

Living in City View now, Baseline Rd & Maitland at the northern boundary are a big barrier. Thankfully it has breaks in traffic and you can cross okay, but having to deal with that is annoying.

The path over the reservoir hill that breaks up Clyde is still nice, though the elevation changes are an annoyance with an 'acoustic' bike. Getting to Woodward Dr and Westboro from there has the hostile barrier of Maitland where drivers are gunning their engines for a Queensway approach. Dumb.

I believe that overpass will include bike lanes, but the real question will be how the slip lanes get configured.
in reply to Ross of Ottawa

The path approaching Woodroffe is reworked and the stormwater holding ponds are attractive.

The new train line over the creek breaks the path access to get under Baseline towards Algonquin. I hope they'll remedy that with an underpass of some kind under the train, and over the creek, so you don't have to trek north backwards up to Iris.
🙁

All in all a nice ride anyway.

Here's the annoying part at Maitland and Woodward. No way/safe way to get to Woodward as circled in green. If there were a path along the red line that would open up a nice opportunity for the route under the Queensway on Clyde.

Woodward, Clyde, Boyd, Laperriere are all plenty wide to take at least a painted bike lane, but a proper one even too.

Or looking closer, just following the hydro corridor from the bike path out to Courtwood cr. seems dead easy.

Sigh.

I'm over there a lot and see tons of bikes crossing Maitland, but very rare to see bikes on Maitland, perhaps there is some other way. I bet @Hansonthebike knows.
in reply to Ross of Ottawa

It's the problem here of lots of East/West bike routes but almost nothing north/south. The are lots of little paths created by people in the red dashed area and if you take them you'll find the businesses there are just dumping their garbage in the bush behind their parking lots 😡
in reply to Marielle Quinton

@mariellequinton Ugh. Yeah it seems the 'powers that be' have no interest in where you can go to/from with the paths, nor how useful they are, they just want to clock up total km count for leisure use.

Maybe with some usage of the space back there it would curtail some of the dumping, but won't hold my breath.

in reply to Ross of Ottawa

It's "Look! You can easily cycle to downtown using the NCC MUPs" with absolutely no mention of how to get to the MUPs. Once they start the demolition of the dairy on Clyde and construction of the towers there, I imagine Clyde and probably laperriere will get redone. Their intersection is supposed to get traffic lights carlingtoncommunity.org/traffi…
in reply to Marielle Quinton

@mariellequinton interesting. That block is quite hostile to pedestrians too. Especially the west side of the street. I've even complained to the city about that stretch seemingly without any interest.
in reply to LillyLyle/Count Melancholia

@LillyHerself thinking the same. Maybe a few diagrams and maps to make it clear. Especially with major development work scheduled nearby.
in reply to Ross of Ottawa

Is there a cyclists' organisation in Ottawa? Could also be good to get them onboard. There's one called "Spokes" in Edinburgh and they are amazing at shaking things up!
in reply to Ross of Ottawa

Maitland itself is surprisingly bright on the Strava heatmap, but let's be honest: the route from the path to Woodward is the sidewalk.
in reply to Shawn Gettler

@shawngettler yeah definitely. I've always been okay with being on the streets in traffic, but that little stretch leaving into the on-ramp is like a Mad-Max holding lane.

Final Gravity (FG): 1.008–1.014
Vedremo che succede dopo la fermentazione 🤞

Vi tornano questi valori?

Thanks!

in reply to Baudaffi

in reply to Captain_64

in reply to Captain_64

in reply to Baudaffi

in reply to vonblubba

in reply to Captain_64

in reply to vonblubba

in reply to Captain_64
