A quotation from Hazlitt

The least pain in our little finger gives more concern and uneasiness than the destruction of millions of our fellow beings.

“Scattered amongst the crowd at Tommy Robinson AKA Stephen Lennon’s September rally were wooden crosses. They were flanked by flags which read ‘Jesus is King’ and ‘Jesus the way, the truth, the life’, as well as Orthodox Christian symbols; upon closer inspection, there were religious figures in full attire participating in the parade. Christian nationalism, the fusion of British identity with Christianity, was at the forefront of the day’s narratives.

where the far right previously attached themselves to cultural Christianity, the movement has shifted towards overt religiosity. There are explicit references to God and Jesus, with the Lord’s Prayer being performed both in local anti-migrant protests and Lennon’s larger rally.”

In spite of the horrid LLM (aka "AI") bubble hype, it can actually be useful. My favourite use case is asking Junie questions about large code bases. For example, clone the IntelliJ source code, open it as a project (so that Junie can search actual code) and ask questions.

Ebola outbreak in DR Congo rages, with 61% death rate & funding running dry

“In the past, the US Agency for International Development, USAID, has provided critical support to respond to such outbreaks. But, with funding cuts and a dismantling of the agency.. health officials fear it will be difficult to compensate for the loss.”

arstechnica.com/health/2025/09…

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

In case anyone wonders, the reason Ebola has not caused a pandemic is that the virus is transmitted via bodily fluids, and not airborne, so it can actually be contained. That being said, we should still do everything in our power to contain it wherever it pops up, to save lives.

@GrapheneOS at this point, are you even sure that Google will release the open-source code of Android 16 QPR1 (and future releases in general) ?
in reply to confettiarenasabotage

Yes, they're going to release Android 16 QPR1. They've said that to their OEM partners. The delay isn't supposed to be happening and indicates severe issues internally at Google.

They're doing everything they can to predetermine election outcomes. How do we get around this?
RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:pjiaf…
in reply to Mastodon Migration

I think the majority of American people are so used to neither needing needing to meaningfully oppose the power structure of their country, nor having any idea how to do so effectively, that they needed the relatively small and easy victory of the Kimmel show. Those with whom I've tested framing this issue as a proof case of what they can do when they act in unison, across the lines of divide-and-conquer, seem receptive. With the right messaging, and with the pragmatism to promote solidarity and scale (rather than ideologically purity testing and infighting), this can be the start of some real momentum.

It's like in the point in the learned helplessness experiments where they had to show the dog it could now escape the shock, by lifting it and placing it on the other side of the barrier. Now that the populace is starting to climb out of the pit of helpless complacency, we just need to reach down and help them up, rather than stepping on their hands to punish them for ever having been there, as had long been the norm among the left throughout the preceding few decades.

Think, act, and speak like a therapist disabusing survivors of the lies and self-limiting beliefs their abuser taught them. When you see or hear someone acting like Christian Picciolini, Jill Duggar, Rich Logis, or Monte Mader did when they were younger, let your every interaction with them—except as strictly necessary for physical safety—be controlled by how you can guide them to and through an exit like all those formers. When you see someone already peaking out that exit, offer them a ride away, not a slap in the face. And when you see them take their first meaningful action to oppose what they used to support—whether directly or through silent complicity—affirm and encourage more in that direction.

Excellent point.

We need to give people a way out of MAGA. Anyone should be welcomed into the antifascist coalition whenever they are ready to join.

But like AA, we need a space for them to articulate what they did and how they can learn from it.

in reply to TC Won't Give In To Lies

The same goes for Democrats who laid the groundwork for maga.

They made fascism easier at home by normalising what the USA does overseas.

Yes, I'm talking about the genocide and the inherent racism and anti-democracy that requires.

I'm also talking about corporate Democrats who allowed the donor class to strip and beat the life chances of ordinary working people.

in reply to Tariq

Sorry, but am not following how this pivot to attacking Democrats is consistent with the above discussion of creating spaces for inclusion in the resistance.

Not asking for a reply. Please don't hijack this thread.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

I'm sorry that you specifically don't get the point.

But I am impressed by how you can tell people what to say or not say.

You sound like a corporate Democrat.

The same democrat behaviour that led to people turning to maga.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

Are people not allowed to criticize Democrats here or did you block him because it was an as hominem. Ad hominems are out of line, but criticism of Democrats is woke.
in reply to Levka

@rzeta0@mas.to @TCatInReality @deFractal @Npars01 @oldclumsy_nowmad @Remittancegirl @gottalaff.bsky.social

It was both ad hominem and non sequitur. The post is meta. It's about ways to engage in constructive dialog. He wanted to hijack it to argue about Democrats. Then he got abusive.

in reply to Mastodon Migration

Tariq either couldn't discern or didn't care about the difference between disagreement in the course of discussion of one topic and changing the topic. Let an ideologue derail a discussion about their favourite grievance, and that's all that will get discussed. The misdeeds of corporate Democrats go without saying and are off topic in this context. It's worth discussion within the DNC or among those who have sway therein, but irrelevant here. (Unless: any DNC leaders in this thread?)

We're talking about what we (in the public resistance movement) can do, not what they (in the party) could do.

in reply to WellsiteGeo

That's an absurd question. A more applicable question would be:

Do more alcoholics recover with active support from AA or other recovery groups, or with everyone around them kicking them to the curb with shaming and then kicking them more when they're down?

in reply to David

Boy, this thread has really flushed out the aggressive reply guys. You are a saint David for indulging them.
in reply to Mastodon Migration

I genuinely found the video enlightening and persuasive. Not having been brought up in a white, Christian family or environment, I did not understand how long it would take to self examine the long-term effects. @deFractal @WellsiteGeo @TCatInReality @Npars01 @oldclumsy_nowmad @gottalaff.bsky.social
in reply to David

Your perspectives are heartening. David's right about the paralysis we feel.

It's near-impossible to be calm and open to people raging in your face, lying about you, cheering those who would destroy you. But we can't let those in that raging state prevail.

We must focus on the imperative need to save democracy, and avoid our emotional pitfalls. Parkrose Perma's video is brilliant.

in reply to Roy -- the dull one

The approach I take is based on Dr. Ross Greene's Collaborative and Proactive Solutions and related works on developmental trauma and co-regulation of children, except adapted to the fact that the emotional child experiencing a tantrum in front of me has an adult body.

When a child screams "I hate you!" at their loving parent or supportive teacher, what that child is trying and failing to communicate is "I'm ashamed/scared/sad, and I lack the emotional self-awareness to recognize that, the communication skills to articulate that, and the self-regulation skills to handle that."

Similarly, whatever irrationally upset behaviour you see from a biological adult—so long as you're not in danger—imagine what childhood neglect or trauma must have led to their believing or acting as they do. Or, as Dr. Brené Brown and Oprah put it, instead of presuming "what's wrong with you," contemplate "what happened to you?"

Of course, a lot of mindfulness and compassion meditation pairs well with education about developmental psychology, trauma, and healing, in order to prepare oneself to deal with them. For a great example of how far your can take it, watch Deeyah Khan's "White Right: Meeting the Enemy" and the subsequent interviews (wherein she puts the interviewee's behaviour in context and reveals that his experience of her lead to him turning against the hate he'd led a movement to promote).

As for those who aren't such hard cases, if such extremes as the "White Right" conversations are possible—a feminist Muslim woman of colour turning who had been the leader of the then-largest Nazi organization in the US against white supremacy through nonjudgmental curiosity and compassion—then so much more so are peacefully welcoming conversations with those who don't quite get it all yet but have already started moving in the direction of justice.

...instead of presuming "what's wrong with you," contemplate "what happened to you?"

Have found this revelation particularly useful in the context of mediating inter-generational family strife. For instance, rather than focusing on what is wrong with an abusive parent, it is useful to imagine what traumas they experienced which have contributed to their nature.

in reply to David

This is similar to Steven Hassan's advice for deprogramming former cult members.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven…

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat…

A bit of compassion helps.

Some aspects of addiction therapy are also applicable.

MAGA are addicted to rage & violence & Republican billionaire authoritarians created those addicts.

That said, the evil they fostered cannot be undone.

1/

in reply to Mastodon Migration

The wealthy people funding MAGA need to be made aware of the consequences of their decisions.

There is no wealth hoarding in a cascading set of crises; global recession, world war, climate crisis, bigotry, pandemics, & ecocide.

Take away the money & the elites who defected from democracy will notice, like Disney, Sinclair, & NexStar noticed.

The MAGA movement dissolves without the money.
