The shutdown game is all about public perception played out in the media, not reality.
Dems *should* use every means available to block every possible GOP initiative. By and large, though, the public won't know or care that any of that is going on, no matter how many press conferences Dems hold or how many times Dems tweet.
Dems need headlines that say "Republicans Provoke Shutdown" not "Congress Shuts Down Government."

If I was, for instance, tethering on a train ride and I wanted my phone to be as charged as possible when I arrived for the day ahead, I often couldn’t get it to go past 80% — over a cable, not wireless! — without using a ridiculous thermoelectric-fan-cooling setup.

Remember: The answer to being overwhelmed is to refocus. The fairest thing to do is to focus on the first appeal you see. ALL of them on Mastodon are criminally under-supported. Our feeling of overwhelm is a misunderstanding of what we’re being asked to do—to pay very serious attention, and to try, and to treat Palestinians with basic respect and dignity.
Remember a simple thing: you alone cannot do it. It doesn’t depend on you. It depends on all of us. Chipping away. Finding new, bold ways to share.
Can you dedicate JUST five minutes a day to sending the link to someone, handing out flyers at a rally or church or DnD club, selling your creative work in exchange for donation receipts, hosting a poetry reading or lecture or stream online or in-person, texting a groupchat, emailing family and friends—all real examples happening every day? (I've done almost all of these personally, so ping me if you have questions! I'm always extremely ready to help.)
Five minutes a day. ONE family only. And you will transform their ability to survive.
Then...can you find new, bold actions to pair with your giving and sharing?
Our giving circle's ethos has been the following:
- Removing the indignity of asking for help
- Providing privacy to several families who put a hard limit on sharing names/photos online
- Ensuring steady and reliable support through weekly giving
- Standing by families who weren't receiving any help at all
That last one is key. We never position the giving circle as superior to any individual fund; it's just six individual funds put together because we, as organizers, couldn't give each family enough sustained attention individually. There's no corporate structure, it isn't an NGO, we don't make purchases, and we don't dictate how the money is spent. I am just a fundraiser host like anyone else in the West who hosts a GFM/Chuffed link.
These are families just like every other one on socials—frustrated, exhausted, and desperate, forced by a genocide to turn to asking strangers for help online.
Meet this with grace. Assume Palestinians in Gaza are reading your posts—because they are.
