Patreon now has full newsletter support, including free newsletters with unlimited subscribers. It'll be interesting to see how this impacts Substack, as this is the most direct large scale competitor yet. (E.g., same pricing, supports podcasts, large mindshare, etc.) But, you know, more ethical.
Patreon has mentioned that custom domains are coming, which is important. But, as of now, it doesn't look like you can import your existing subscribers list from elsewhere, which makes migrating from Substack to Patreon rather more challenging.
Another distinguishing feature of Patreon and Substack is that you can export *all* of your Patreon members emails into another platform if you eventually want to. Whereas Substack encourages people to "follow" you instead of "subscribing," and followers connections are owned/controlled by Substack.
