I will definitely be downloading #affinity and seeing if I can make the switch. Pretty certain I will have to keep using InDesign for work reasons but I'll be very happy to offload the rest of the #adobe suite if I can. So fed up with being treated as AI-fodder after years of loyalty.

@Nick_Stevens_graphics unfortunately they closed the forums at the start of the month and they are no longer accessible. Discord only now (and I guess possibly some part of whatever Canva use might appear).

@smilingdemon @Nick_Stevens_graphics Wait what? Discord only?

Goddamnit i'm starting to believe that Discord is a pessimistic solution for Software support nowadays

I rewrote my little code minifier & pretty-printer from scratch, and released it today for freeee. I use it ALL the time to format weird json snippets from APIs and things, but it supports a bunch of formats. Give it a try.

Welp, I've stopped using Yahoo for search again. They started up with AI summaries. I was thumbs-downing them with nasty notes, but then the search results themselves started to suck as badly as anything else.

Searx was my co-go-to with Yahoo, but my top favorite instances started erroring out, then the next one I tried would only return results from a handful of sites. I got tired of constantly switching instances.

So I'm back on Qwant. I forgot why I stopped using that one. Either they fixed it, or I will be reminded soon enough.

Well this was a pleasant surprise. My fix for link preview images from The Guardian was accepted and merged by the #Mastodon team last night. So hopefully everything is all fixed in the next release. Anyway. You're welcome hahaha. :flower: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p…

Methinks ICE are about to get a taught tutorial on the Streisand effect: persecuting pretty white women won't play well in the news, going after a congressional candidate won't exactly make her voters stay home ...

A favourite isbjørn / polar bear photo from 2022. The square is a patch of ice with snow cleared away. It might have been a place for collecting ice cores, or light transmission measurements? It seems like the bear is looking up at us on the ship, pointing at our vandalism and asking 'what. are. you. doing. to. my. house?'

Tricked myself into a 90 minute treadmill sesh after all. First I set it up for 60 minutes, then I was in the middle of a game so I just kept adding on minutes.

DoD strips job protections from civilian employees, directs managers to fire with ‘speed and conviction’

cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/48899185

The Defense Department is stripping away job protections from its civilian employees and directing managers to “act with speed and conviction” to fire employees performing “unsuccessfully.”

A new Sept. 30 memo titled “Separation of Employees with Unacceptable Performance,” which became public Tuesday, also warned that managers will be held accountable if they fail to remove poor performers.

Pentagon’s Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Anthony Tata, who signed the memo, suspended the department’s requirement that managers attempt to rehabilitate underperforming employees — clearing the way for supervisors to fire workers whose performance is deemed “unacceptable” more quickly.

“They are trying to cloak it in legalistic language and make it sound legitimate, but the reality is they’re stripping due process significantly and making it easier for arbitrary terminations, similar and functional to private sector employment,” Sean Timmons, managing partner at Tully Rinckey PLLC, told Federal News Network.
