Ok my fellow nerds, #fennec, a #Firefox version compiled for #fdroid, doesn't load websites 80% of the time, completely randomly. I searched for solutions and concluded that since nothing works it must be #android itself that nerfs the competing browser.

My question is, how dumb is using something based on WebView, actually? I installed #Fulguris and it's blazing fast, seems to be working 100% of the time. It's open.

Since I have no experience with android development, is WebView chromium in disguise or is it fine? And I opening myself to all of the Google malpractice through it? I wish I could use Fennec but it turns literally useless, when I can't even load wikipedia most of the times.

@yoasif okay, so if I'm using that I am in fact just using chromium... That's a bummer.

It's really hard to make a brand new web engine. Just look at Servo and Ladybird.

@yoasif
I tried #WebLibre (in #Fdroid #browser category) for the same reason and it has some interesting features. The only issues I had right away were it doesn't use Firefox sync (so no passwords, bookmarks and history transfert or tabs sharing) and "Google Safe Browsing" couldn't be disabled.

your issue with Fennec sounds a lot like this bug that was found in the latest version.

Temporary work around at the moment is to lock your phone, wait a couple of seconds and unlock it again. Fixes it again for a little while. Hopefully a fix out for it soon.

Ah, so it's not just this one experiencing this. Fun.
Has stopped loading things after a recent update. Its guess is some DNS failure, probably caused by some change to enhanced privacy stuff.
It'll look into this further now. Good start will be a rollback to a previous version.

WebView is what chromium is using.
Just depends what you wish to use. Not got any experience with the browser you mention, but if you trust it, it's probably okay. If the browser uses the system WebView, it can actually slightly lower your attack surface, assuming the implementation is remotely up to date.

@fox someone in the comments pointed out there's an open issue in fennec repository about it ^^

I used to use Fennec and I still think it's an awesome project, but personally, I switched to the official Firefox build on the Play Store a while back. There was a long period of time where Fennec couldn't be updated because of some dependencies that couldn't be used in F-Droid. This left Fennec in an outdated and insecure state (there were important security updates around that time). As much as I appreciate and believe in Fennec, it's not something I can recommend.

I don't have play store so that's out of question for me

I see. You can download it directly from Mozilla but you wouldn't get updates automatically then.

I'm trying to figure out if #Obtainium has it, which I've heard about but never used. Getting blocked from Obtainium's website for some reason.
in reply to Licho

Oh, of course! #AuroraStore (which is on F-Droid) can get you the app from Play Store. But I only hope it doesn't rely on any Google Play APIs that you don't have.

And it seems that Obtainium does indeed have Firefox directly from Mozilla: apps.obtainium.imranr.dev/
