Cigna - like all private health insurers - has two contradictory imperatives:

I. To keep its customers healthy; and

II. To make as much money for its shareholders as is possible.

This is what Doug Ford is essentially trying to bring Ontario.

Please keep reminding us how dumb an idea this is.

@CptSuperlative There are no working models in the world today of privatized healthcare that controls costs and provides adequate services across the whole population.

Letting profitability be a factor in who gets to be healthy will never give us good ethical outcomes.

The legal imperative isn't to keep anyone healthy. By law their job is to protect the insurance fund and ensure they can pay out all possible claims.

and Americans will fight for this death care system tooth & nail! My state insurance is far better than many people’s private insurance, but the propaganda has them so scared. Tying health care to your job is part of americas slave labor mindset.

@CptSuperlative Kenneth Arrow won the Nobel Prize in Economics for proving that private, for-profit medical insurance cannot work to deliver health care.

@CptSuperlative I have long called the entire healthcare industry a legal mafia. We pay obscenely expensive premiums with no guarantee we'll get financial help when we need it. #LegalMafia

They are not really contradictory. If people stay healthy, the insurance companys make more money. Don't assume that "keeping customers healthy" means they're altruistic and want people to be happy and healthy. It's NEVER about actual *health*, it's ALWAYS ONLY about what makes the most $$. If they made more money if people were sick, they'd absolutely figure out a way to make sure that we were all as sick as possible.
