Hugely disappointing to see Andy Yen (Proton CEO) tout the Republican Party as the ones “standing up for the little guys” 🤢

Oh nooo 🙁

I've heard good things about #tutaMail. It appears to be #openSource.

I do seem to remember possibly hearing something similar to what's happening now to proton happening to them though... I'm digging around for it.

*edit: oh right... It's a #honeypot set up (at least in part) by my government:

torontosun.com/news/national/e…

Additionally, it was never actually open source, either.

@bhaug
So what about what? Their own denial? Their flimsy proof that they can't possibly bahve any backdoor in their server code because their client code is open source?

Please. Give me a break.

@B.
in reply to sb arms & legs

@sb
#Tutanota #honeypot?

On the + sie they publish their whole client code in GitHub (for what that's worth). I am not an #ITsec expert and cannot judge if there are still backdoors possible.

This Otis guy is a murky figure, parts of his story don't make sense as apparently HE was asked by the criminals to use the service first.

It's easy to damage reputations in this domain, so what's a bit surprising is that Tutanota did not sue Ortis for these extremely damaging statements to wash themselves clean (his claims would have undergone scrutiny in a court trial then).

(Dear @Tutanota team, why didn't you?

@sb, are there other indications for the honeypot claim? because this single one doesn't completely hold for me.

@protonprivacy I have one question: at what cost? Human rights, gay rights, women's rights, trans rights, immigrant rights, and so much more.

The GOP *is* the party of billionaires (look at donors, Project 2025, etc). The fact that a stopped clock might give the right time is mostly irrelevant if that same clock pushes for all other clocks to stop as well (I know, bad analogy, but work with me here).

That doesn't mean I like Dems - they're feckless *b/c* they are rolling over to Trump.

-Musk is practically the president elect
-Peter Thiel just wrote an insane pro-Trump editorial in the Financial Times

-Bezos killed the editorial endorsing Harris
-Andreessen Horowitz (biggest VCs in silicon valley) back Trump
-Trump's FCC killed net neutrality

etc etc

@protonprivacy I see a parallel in this argument with the Dems' policy weaknesses on Gaza which arguably cost them the White House in 2024.

Because Dems weren't tough enough on Israel, progressive voters abandoned Harris and helped Trump win. But Trump and the Reps will be even less tough on Israel, virtually ensuring greater peril for the Gazans in the future.

Likewise, R's will abandon antitrust concerns

@protonprivacy I appreciate that JD Vance was the only one who showed up to the invitation, but his doing one (ostensibly) positive thing in the midst of a ton of negative ones doesn’t make him, or the party he’s part of, worthy of ANY praise.

Weird and sincerely concerning that the head of a company that isn’t even based in the States (and for good reason) is praising what is widely identified as its incoming fascist party, one loaded to the rafters with billionaires working fervently to roll back the rights of those little guys you somehow think they’re defending.

Watching what was a well-respected institution like Proton beclown itself in this way is revolting.

Coming onto Mastodon of all places to vomit your rationalizations for supporting a neofascist MAGA movement is a breathtakingly bad decision, especially for an organization that depends so much on its reputation and trust. The last Trump administration tried to abuse the All Writs Act to compel backdoors in technology like yours. They are promising to persecute immigrants, minorities, women of childbearing age, and the LGBT community; the kind of people for whom private communications is literally a life-or-death matter. To align yourself with an explicitly malign incoming Trump administration with a well-established history of abusive pro-surveillance measures is to make yourself untrustworthy in the eyes of the people that need you the most.

I don't know who is operating this social media account, or what possessed you to post this nonsense. Your literal job is to try to build and maintain a positive reputation among your potential customer base, and yet you use your time to shred that reputation in an act of performative self-destruction. You should back away from the keyboard, take a walk, and self-reflect.

Or you could just keep posting through it, as you seem to be doing here.

@BroBot90001 @Infoseepage I recommend @Tutanota. I’ve been with them for over a year and have only good things to say. Even the free version comes with tons of features, including sending encrypted emails to non-users (the process was easy for both parties when I used it).

There are extra features with the paid version but I’ve never used them, so I can’t speak to it, but I don’t see why they wouldn’t work as great.

Communication is good too!

@Infoseepage @protonprivacy
Any recommendations on alternatives?
Got things currently set up with proton but will gladly drop it and move away from this kinda of duck headed fascist enabling.

@kevin There is literally no way Trump intends to go after Big Tech in any way that doesn’t directly benefit him. He’s not going to suddenly demand his oligarch buddies give up these platforms. Believing the Republicans on this is like trusting a wolf to oversee your sheep.

Yup. That's why big tech are kissing Trump's ring, they know this is the only thing Trump actually cares about.

Trump doesn't care about anything except people praising him and giving him money and power. There is never going to be a priniciple that Trump stands for, because he has no principles at all except his own self-gratification.

As a Mastodon/fediverse supporter it bums me out that this was posted to Reddit, and Andy Yen framed this as “a Tweet from my personal account from last year suddenly got resurfaced on BlueSky,” but anyways here’s his final reply for anyone interested:
