I'd love to hear what you think about #AdoptAWriter

Nothing to do with it (or very little), I love the page layout of your article (and generally your blog) : it's so clear and easy to read 🤩
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

So it's undoubtedly the combination of content and form: I went to read because the subjects interested me, but the overall layout made for very enjoyable reading. Often, technical subjects are written by technical people, so the readability of the text is less of a concern 😅

@danslerush I just wanted to write the same, the content is as always great, but the look makes it also very pleasing to read.

#adoptawriter sounds great, really! That's a perfect example of getting the most out of complentary skills and interests and use this to build a better future.

I don't yet know my place in it, but I'm intrigued.
Maybe giving a warm welcome for any adopted writers could be a first small step. 🙂

Network effect makes it difficult to debillionaire one’s online presence. I’m trying.

Elena I read your article 👍 , if you are serious about social justice and the rights of women please look deep into the attack on the human right to self defense, and check out this video of empowered women too!

I finally got to read your article 😊 I like your idea of #adoptawriter but to be able to adopt one, they must already be willing to join and I think this is the harder part than the technical hurdles..
But on the other hand it's a complex question and there is no silver bullet, the way to federate social media consists of many parts, and being helpful for sure is one of them.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

agree with this. So hard to get friends to move though. People are so conditioned to the big tech solutions and dopamine hits.

- 'If she decided to move her newsletter to another platform she could make even more money'

My hunch says that most of this big names have separate agreements where they make more money than we think (part of the VC money would go there, for growth). With NDAs and all that.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but a lot of stuff works like that.

I loved your article though, and I'll start thinking of a writer to adopt right now!

in reply to jandi

@jandi that’s an excellent point. Substack used to have open incentives like those back in the day to lure journalists and writers. I never thought about extra (secret) incentives with NDAs. I have to say, it wouldn’t surprise me at all

posts like this make mastodon feel like one of the underground news feeds that Spider Jerusalem uses to unseat multiple corrupt presidents in Transmetropolitan
in reply to naught101

@naught101 thank you?! sadly I'm not getting the references but I hope you mean all this in a good way. I love the resistance there is on the fediverse (to big tech)
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

It's absolutely a compliment 😀

If you're at all into cyberpunk and Hunter S. Thompson, you absolutely should read Transmetropolitan, it's amazing.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

This is excellent and something I have been saying for a while.
If anyone feels the need to use one of the Corporate Social Media Platforms, just make sure you are always pointing people back to sources hosted on the #SocialWeb or similar.
Also put in your Bio "You can mostly find me on Mastodon here....." or similar
There are lots of reasons why people might still want/need to be on those platforms but none of them should stop us trying to build something better.
