Dear @Gargron,

Hello from Nepal, where Mastodon, along with other social media apps, have been banned, as per the Nepal Telecommunications Authority and the Supreme Court, effective today, unless they enlist the app and comply with all the legal, tax and vague demands regarding content "moderation" stuff.

UPDATE:
These platforms have now been unbanned.

what do they mean by “Mastodon”? Only mastodon.social? All mastodon.* instances? Only instances that run Mastodon but not e.g. Pleroma/Friendica? Everything on the Fediverse?

How do we tell these folks that they have no idea of what they’re talking about?

@fabio likely this

in reply to Fabio Manganiello

@fabio it did end up being just a .social DNS block

UPDATE:

mastodon.social is now inaccessible. And yes, it is just a DNS block on this specific domain.

proving the point that most of the political institutions are run by a bunch of tech illiterates who can’t even crop a screenshot but then talk about blocking websites, platforms or whole protocols.

I don't know how they expect to ban Mastodon as a whole, or if these dinosaurs even know/understand/comprehend how Mastodon and the ActivityPub network works, but I'm certain they intend to DNS block the main .social site, as they've done with TikTok, and a massive list of adult websites in the past.

97% of the population of Nepal already know how to use a VPN thanks to previous govt moves. Will be interesting to see how this one goes.

Pretty silly to even target Mastodon. They make the code not the service.

in reply to Ewen Bell 📸

They probably are just blocking all the largest social media sites people use. M.s being the largest instance gets targeted. But considering there's a million random forums or small Fediverse instances or chat servers or whatever else, without some deep packet inspection stuff, it'd be really hard to block everything.

@JessTheUnstill @ewen they are going against just the 26 specific ones from the list in my original post, for now.
in reply to Ash Meshed Up

Seems a heavy handed move. Keep posting about it, please, and thanks for the info!

Day 2 of the protests continues, with demands for justice for the the unarmed students killed yesterday.

While no casualties have been reported today, there have been reports of arrests being made.

Balen, The mayor of Kathmandu, the capital, has shown support for the movement, and has condemned Prime Minister K. P. Oli, outright calling him a terrorist who, not being a father himself, could never understand the pain of losing his children.

in reply to Ash Meshed Up

It has been confirmed that Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli has resigned.
