Pixelfed will never introduce ads. Ever.

Multiple acquisition offers this year? All declined. Another one last week? Also declined.

I built Pixelfed for the people, not shareholders.

That's why we're exploring Web Monetization - direct creator payments with zero privacy compromise.

I won't sell out now, or ever.

I love you too much, and am forever grateful for you helping me come out and become the dev I always dreamed of ❤️

Sensitive content

You should wear a traffic cone, like VLC developers do, when a shareholder wants to meet you :ageblobcat:

awesome, we're all for letting creators monetise their work; after all, everyone's got bills.

Web Monetisation is a really great way forward, and it should fit nicely with Pixelfed and Loops! We just wish it could handle one-off purchases, then it would work for us too 😀

Hummm... "Pixelfed will never introduce ads. Ever." - Maybe Pixelfed won't introduce ads, but "Web Monetization will" .
One of the main selling points that Web Monetization, according to it's website, is using is exactly:
"Regain lost ad revenue."

VC slides into your DM’s. “We won’t offer you money but we can guarantee your favourite hockey team wins the Stanley Cup next year.”

Will you still have the resolve not to sell?

Obviously, the above is in jest.

Can you say something about who the people / orgs are that want to acquire? I don't mean names, but are these companies with other open-source application software, or foundations or ...? What are they trying to get out of acquiring? Revenue? ...?
in reply to dansup

I respect that too, however aren't you afraid that someone else is going to fork #pixelfed and get massive backing from shareholders to market it like crazy by giving huge ad revenues so that they lure over the users?
in reply to dansup

I don't trust anyone with this.
But since it is open source and people could fork it or just stay on old versions since you can't force an update, it doesn't matter, only for the servers that you are running.
This reason why I trust OSS more than any closed source project. 1/2

Tell them they can financially support the work in exchange for a mention for being sponsors/supporters. And that's it. No influence or involvement otherwise.
in reply to dansup

why can't I upload videos? I've tried many sizes and formats, but none can be uploaded.

You are the GOAT of the Fediverse Dan! <img class=" title=":fediverse:"/> <img class=" title=":pixelfeed:"/>
in reply to dansup

Am I misreading this, or isn't this just the statement that the only thing between ads to selling out is your good will? The question becomes how you can ensure and make believable that your intention doesn't change.
in reply to Philip Kaludercic

@pkal
your observation has nothing to do with dansup specifically

this is your problem with every single person you know, your entire life

@benroyce @pkal I think his point is that it depends on a single person's will. Some other FLOSS projects have a board or are more community developed such that these decisions don't come to a single person.

@ebrum @pkal
i agree 100%

and that's coming, if dansup wants to grow. but currently it's "bloke in a garage" mode. so i agree with the criticism in content, i just disagree with the timing

in reply to Ben Royce 🇺🇦

@benroyce @ebrum @pkal Great point!

You're absolutely right that good will alone isn't enough.

That's exactly why I'm establishing Pixelfed as a non-profit entity with our core principles (no ads, no selling out, federated projects only, user privacy and safety as a main priority) legally enshrined in our charter.

I will hand over all assets to this entity because it's the right thing to do ❤️
