Nice to see it's not just Threads and Bluesky, good for the internet as a whole to not stick to one!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

We may not be the biggest by numbers yet, but Mastodon (and the fediverse) has proven itself to be an effective and reliable communications platform over the course of the last 8 years, and does not depend on venture capital to survive. The #fediverse is the future.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Would be kinda cool if the future had some of the features all the other platforms have today, though.
in reply to elCelio ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@elCelio Without built-in quote-post functionality, it simply can't be used for the kinds of cross-contextual discussions other platforms allow, and which journalists, analysts, and other producers of high-quality posts require. Commonly-seen workarounds demonstrate a clear need for it and simultaneously show precisely how people want to use it on this platform.

Years of talk, a UX problem is now a policy issue, and I don't understand. I just want a basic short-form microblog feature.

in reply to Ryne Hager

@ryne
I see in other platforms that the feature is used more for "look at how stupid this post is" rather than "look at this interesting idea, here is my contribution"

In Mastodon you can comment, boost if you like, block if you don't.
This makes easier for agreeable content to spread rather than disagreeable one, creating a different, albeit smaller, environment

I think this makes it a policy issue: people may have different opinions about it, but there is a trade-off to consider

in reply to elCelio ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

@ryne
anyway, I read that they will try to implement it in the next 4.4 release.

"weโ€™re turning our focus to 4.4, which will include:

Quote Posts: We are resuming work on this long-awaited feature, and it will be our main focus for the rest of the year."

in reply to Ryne Hager

@ryne
Some of us came here precisely because the fediverse is different and doesn't have all those features.

It would be super boring if every restaurant had the same exact menu.

I spent 25% of my life working on Mastodon. It's kind of wild when you think about it. When I started, Google+ was still around. We're doing what one of the most resourceful companies in the world couldn't do. It's not easy. It's always easier to just build A Website, then slap some ads on it. But the fediverse is the long game.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I'm telling you, my experience here has been amazing. I have no reason to go anywhere else. I love the dynamic of the #fediverse I have no complains. You cant get a more organic experience than here in the fediverse.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

The long game might just win, in the endโ€ฆ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Thx for all your efforts. I was late to the game, but later, I believe, I will still be reognized as an early adopter. More and more people understand what's it all about.

this is how I see it too. No matter what happens: Mastodon will always be around. Twitter can just go offline any day now.
in reply to Erik Uden ๐Ÿ‘

@ErikUden Mastodon will always be around if leadership and management exists to ensure it stay around, otherwise it'll fork into Elephant or something.

You need good people skills at the top to keep everyone involved happy, ignoring issues doesn't make them go away.

in reply to Emelia ๐Ÿ‘ธ๐Ÿป

@ErikUden there's plenty of examples of open source projects and platforms that failed because they didn't have the right leadership.

There's also plenty where the original leader didn't grow with the needs of the project or burnt out and a fork happens.

Joe Vinegar reshared this.

in reply to Emelia ๐Ÿ‘ธ๐Ÿป

By my words I didn't want to imply that your (very wonderful) work was meaningless or claim Mastodon as a project just exists by default, but rather that the idea of a decentralized network shutting down completely is unheard of.

I preferred Google+ to some of its rivals at the time; Google could do it but chose not to. It was a decent design.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Mastodon (respectively ActivityPub) can outlive things like Google+ the same way SMTP outlived about a bazillion messengers already: Because it's a protocol, not a product. A protocol can't be just canceled or enshittified beyond recognition when investors are unhappy. As long as anybody is willing to run software that supports the protocol, it will survive practically forever. Which is pretty awesome I think. ๐Ÿ˜€

Do you have a plan to keep the whole thing running and stable into the future, I'm not talking about the technical side but the management of the whole thing?
I mean so it's more like the Apache foundation?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

If you ever want to hear a good story about social media, thereโ€™s a surprising amount of Xooglers/Googlers still very salty about the failure of Google+.

I appreciate you and the open source future for all that you have inspired us to strive for!

I began using the internet when there wasn't an internet and you had to keep a dozen floppies on hand in case you needed to reinstall windows 3.x
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Do you make money somehow through Mastodon, or is this basically your time being devoted to a just cause?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I'm grateful you spent, and continue to spend, your energy for good. Evil requires just as much devotion. Our newly elected ๐ŸŠ leader first set out for the post in 2000. He never would have made it there without the help of other evil doers, notably, Mitch McConnell, paving a path to destruction by stacking our high court. He was at it even longer. Good, Evil, it's a choice. Thank you!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

letโ€™s keep doing the slow-thing; a true social net will be built at a different pace, in a more social way.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

TY for all your hard work. I believe it is paying off. I left #twitter in 2017 but went cold turkey. Tried #bluesky earlier this year but after a week I deactivated because it felt the same as twitter and I left twitter because of how bad it made me feel. A few weeks ago I decided to try mastodon and it hits different. I'm not steeling myself before opening the app. I'm still getting a feel for it but I'm I haven't left yet and don't intend to any time soon. Long live the #fediverse
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I've been here 2 years now and apart from the little glitch with the penultimate update which caused it to crash (which you quickly sorted - many thanks!) I've had no problems. I've blocked and muted very few accounts, which says a lot about it's users and to press gained 1800 followers. Cesspit Central on the other hand, I've blocked and muted countless accounts, many of which are ads and getting followers is like pulling teeth.
Long may Mastodon rule!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

in an age where multinational corporations backed by ridiculous wealth dominate the industry, it's genuinely bonkers that Mastodon was founded by just a regular bloke and, after all this growth, is still maintained by a small team of actual humans just trying to make a nice platform and not just another money tap.

So yeah, thanks for that! ๐Ÿ˜Š

(if you could maybe make a mobile O/S next please? ๐Ÿ˜†)

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Thank you and every contributor for all the work you do to keep Mastodon going (and growing!)
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I wonder if not being the biggest is a blessing, really. Those huge numbers come with some significant downsides, such as becoming a much more attractive target for bots and scammers.

@Gargron

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Thank you for your good work! I've only been here a while, but I've come to believe that Mastodon and the Fediverse are the only hopes for social media as the gathering place for the free exchange of talents and ideas that we idealistically imagined with dial up BBSs back in the 80s. Makes me sad to see people wake up enough to finally leave X and blindly follow the other sheep to Threads and Bluesky. Mastodon is the way.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

You have done a great job with it. Any chance we could get public lists and an improved DM method that doesn't confuse the masses?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Yes, and we're not here to be the biggest or the most successful platform. No need to compare ourselves to the others all the time. The people who are here enjoy it because it's good. We will keep on growing anyways. Thanks for your great job! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’–

Mastodon is a rock. A Giantsโ€™ Causeway of a rock. Thank you.

It is said that people always do the right thingโ€ฆ after trying everything else first. I wish everyone well on Bluesky, although to me it feels like they secured their AOL Keyword and not their domain.

I see this ending with Bluesky switching to Mastodon standards and just becoming another federated server.

All government agencies and public media should use self-hosted Mastodon instances for their customer-facing communication. Wonโ€™t happen in the US anytime soon, but I wouldnโ€™t say itโ€™s an unlikely scenario in Europe. When that happens, users will follow.

@jon Mastodon is a real social network. It is not an advertising app controlled by a single business entity. If it was that you can share text, images and video with other people what makes an app a social network, e-mail would have been a social network too.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

All good. And deserving of our gratitude and support. But calling anything โ€œthe futureโ€ means itโ€™s not โ€œnowโ€ and leaves open any answer to, โ€œso, when then?โ€

Iโ€™m reminded of that great scene in THE CONTENDER where the President, played by Jeff Bridges, stingingly tells an annoyingly ambitious congressman, โ€œYou're the future of the Democratic party. And you always will be.โ€

I worry Mastodon is the future of social media. And always will be.

New here ... but would like to learn more about Fediverse ๐Ÿ˜€ Any hint where to begin, Eugen ? Greetings from NL & Happy weekend. (P.S.: Here about my activities: pomshop.nl/pages/about-us and my own vision: pomshop.nl/manifesto )
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Arguably, the Fediverse is also the past. Before the internet there was Fido Net. There are some marked similarities. ( And just so you know, FidoNet is not dead. We may soon have some nodes talking this protocol!)
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I'm pretty sure the #Fediverse is here to stay. It's easy to run your own instance. Like email it's easy to communicate between instances. This is the perfect prerequisite for something that can sustain itself. Even if by tomorrow you decided to stop working on it (please don't ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ) it would still continue to grow, I'm sure. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this.

Mastodon is an inspiration of a better future for our online social spaces.

Now is the time to work hard and polish what needs to be done to compete with Bsky. What do you think is the biggest feature/quirk holding Mastodon back from the mainstream? Google Trends is showing a problem here.

All I've heard about this week is Bluesky and Threads but nothing about Mastodon, so this is very comforting. I truly wish more people would sign up here and give it a try. Granted I'm told the same thing about the others which I don't have accounts on lol.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron, yes, thank you for your foresight/tireless efforts. Getting user signups is important but not sufficient to help this platform take off. We need more organizations/people with large followings to set up servers. This has a compounding effect. These organizations/individuals, in turn, invite their communities to join them. This will help new end users find a comfortable home very quickly (one of the big hurdles for many) before they venture out into the wider fediverse.

I love Mastodon. Been here since 2018.

The main thing we need today is people who can afford to operate the instances they create. Running an instance with 30,000 active users requires server power that costs real money and takes technical skill to operate. Some server operators get in over their heads.

I participated in the capture of Google+ for posterity for the Internet Archive when it was ending. This was a real education in the enormity of server power and data storage required to run something like Google+, especially after they stopped throttling us. We're downloading how many gigabits per second??? Holy fucking shit. "Yeah, we found more servers in Thailand we can lease...yeah 10 Terabits per second more...okay..."

Running a large instance is not a hobby, it's real work and takes real money.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

While bsky seems to be primarily used via their official app, I have the feeling Mastodon is used comparably more often via third party apps. The numbers may not tell the whole story.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

do you have any numbers for the connected Fediverse? Blockiverse instances don't add much of value.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I hope so. This is a good platform for technical people and topics but most of my normal friends are joining bluesky, and so far no adoption for the bluesky bridge

> while the MAU has jumped to 894K (across all Mastodon servers).

Measured how? What's included and what isn't?

* Is it just vanilla Mastodon, or does it include variants like Glitch-Soc and Hometown?

* Is it all servers, or just those that opt-in/ don't opt-out?

* Is it all servers found by crawling, or from requests to include instances?

These details matter to how we weight fediverse stats like this.
