I don't know enough about the #Mastodon code, but i DO know a few things about WebDev, Usability, and DesignPatterns.

This wouldn't be something, you, the instance admin, would configure away, right? There'd be much juicier targets, if you wanted to "optimise" the amount of traffic! (re-encoding JPEGs, and stuff..)
