Laurie Anderson, oh superman. I mentioned this song today evening on @firesidefedi show.
This music has been used into AIDS related campaign during 1980s and 90s; it provided basic information about the virus but its scary atmosphere, visuals and slogan, have contributed to create the still persisting stigma against people living with HIV.
Slogan said "if you know it, you avoid it".
Why could it feed stigma? In English no misunderstanding because "it" refers to objects and even diseases, for people we have "him, her, them".
But Italian uses "lo" / "la" both for human beings and objects, gender desinences included.
So it becomes "if you know a person with AIDS, avoid them".

@lcruggeri Exactly that one. No idea of what I would have done, being in place of those politicians who had to manage an emergency of a sexually transmitted deadly infection. Really deadly, not a metaphor. But their communication team had created a short-term fear, and long-term stigma, ad.
One guy I chatted with some years ago, lived all that period; and called it "Anally Injected Death Sentence. AIDS".
He's still alive thanks to modern treatments.

Purple line vs. alone viola

Purple line, in italian translated as "alone viola", caused misunderstandings for international users as "alone" has a specific meaning. Someone in need of company.

We’re discussing of O Superman, by Laurie Anderson, the music used for Italian 80s-90s AIDS campaign.

That song is definitely disturbing – it talks about war and soldiers.

The purple line. In Italian we call it “alone viola” which translated means “violet alo” a sort of sign surrounding someone to mark them. Such as “be aware of them!” That campaign was literally a torture during those years.

Im Alex. “Gifter”. @elettrona ‘s co-worker. POSITIVE pole of the atom.

I stopped attending public messenger apps because of this purple line; I was still HIV negative at the time of ICQ, Aol Instant Messenger, and other stuff which allowed you to chat with anyone around the world even picking them up randomly. Before Tinder. Before Grindr.

No app was specifically designed for dating or hooking up so EVERYTHING could be used for that purpose.

To discourage people from harassing me I placed “ALONE VIOLA” as display name; I was quite naive about Internet and thought just to avoid homosexual men searching for occasional sex assuming I could be found just by Italian folks.

It wasn’t emoji time yet so I couldn’t place “alone viola ☣️”

And what was the result? Homosexual males were out but I attracted hetero who exchanged “viola” for a female name and not a color. And “alone” not for the Italian meaning of that word but they interpreted with English translation of ALONE. Someone in need of company.

PS sorry @firesidefedi I couldn’t join you yesterday as I am not a true Fediverse actor. I’m just Elettrona’s co-worker helping on writing. The DIRTY WORK is hers.
