On this day in 1966, Star Trek first beamed into living rooms across America. None of us could have imagined then the journey it would set us on. And not just the cast and crew, but the millions of fans who would find hope, inspiration, and community in its vision of the future.

Over the decades, Iโ€™ve been humbled and grateful for the love youโ€™ve shown, not only to me, but to the ideals of Star Trek itself: diversity, unity, and the belief that together, humanity can boldly go where none have gone before. Thank you for your unwavering support and for keeping this dream alive all these years. Live long and prosper, always.

Thank you for giving us dreams, hope and adventures. The โ€žstaffโ€œ of the USS Enterprise was so diverse, never would I have thought the direction our world is heading to today. ๐Ÿซ‚

You, and some of the cast gave me the hope that I could be accepted one day. Iโ€™ve been struggle as being gay in a small town in the beginning of the 80โ€™s.

But Star Trek helped me believe in a bright future where everybody could be himself.

It also the root of my passion for science and my regular geekiness.

Thank you sooooo much.

And ๐Ÿ––

I can definitely cross an item off my bucket list.

Thank you so much. It means a lot to me.

Thank you Mr Hikaru Sulu! Well and precisely said!

I was convinced that this world deserves to become a better place from the day on when I attended the first broadcasts of the Star Trek saga - such a beautiful, such a great inspiration. ๐Ÿ––

So glad you are still going boldly - you embody the Starfleet ideals that your government has discarded.

Thank you... @georgetakei

For the entertainment and the thought-provoking questions raised throughout. In short, thank you for your service, not just to the US, but to global human values worth their weight in gold!

everytime I watch a Star Trek series again I think by myself how wonderful the world and humanity could be. I watched TOS for the first time this year because I thought I should and the stories were already wonderful. Gene Roddenberry was a visionair.
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

I'm scared about what's going to happen to Star Trek now that the company that owns it has gone in a direction completely at odds with its principles.
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

The hope in humanity that Star Trek displayed was ahead of its time.

It showed "we don't have to live this way" to millions of people.

We don't have to accept corruption.

We don't have apathetically sit by & watch as the planet fries.

We don't have to tolerate dictatorship.

We don't have to live with an economy rigged against the very premise of "Live Long & Prosper" by selfish billionaires.

in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

thank YOU sir for being part of Star Trek. I've been re-watching the old series and many of the stories are surprisingly good. Star Trek was ahead of the time in so many ways.
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

I was lying in front of the tele as a kid and watched every episode. We didn't have a colour tv in the beginning though, that came later

This turned out to be a very special project for a lot of people.

I know you've heard a million of these stories, so I won't imagine you'll make time to indulge mine, but I'll share it anyway: dad had (on Betamax) every episode of the original series except one, which he meticulously recorded from the Harrisburg airwaves over a summer or so, then re-recorded to drop the commercials. I was born in the '80s and it was one of the first shows I was ever familiar with; I don't know if Dad watched it with me at first or if I found the tapes in the collection and started putting them in, but it was on-background for most of my childhood from 3 to 12 at least. Next Generation then hit at just the right time to catch me, and dad and I watched it together for years. It didn't hurt that the character of Wesley Crusher was just a touch older than me and sort of became the fictional big brother I didn't have.

Thank you for making something that ended up very important in my life. It's a series I've come back to again and again as I've gotten older, and it's meant something different every time. You and your co-stars got the ball rolling on something very special, and I'm grateful for it.

in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

Mr. T, you have been an amazing inspiration for so many of us. You and Nichele especially. I will always cherish the two conventions I got to share with all of you so many years ago in Colorado. I still have the photos, memorabilia and memories from those days. You won't remember each of us, but we remember you sir. The franchise inspired my art and writing. Told me that a black, queer person CAN do something meaningful. Humble blessings to you and yours! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

the ideals of Star Trek and that millions of fans believe in exactly this, let me hope that humanity has a future, that not is all just bad. But that doesn't fall into anyone's lap. You have to stand up and do something yourself. Everyone to their own best and skills. You can share with others, join forces. You can also fight or just pass on knowledge. The only important thing is that you do something yourself and don't just complain. With that in mind, I'd rather thank you George and everyone else who gets up and does something. Thank you from far away Germany.

I was born in '65 so it wasn't until the early '70's that I first discovered Star Trek. My babysitters husband LOVED the show, and my parents were late picking me up, and I got to see it for the first time. I'll say this, I will die with the words "live long and prosper" on my lips. Forgive me for taking the liberty with Spock. He was MY MAN.

Hard to think of a TV show that has transformed our culture more thoroughly. We owe so much to you all! Especially you and Michelle! Thank you so much!!!
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

The first Star Trek series I watched was TNG. I got hooked. Then I followed along (DS9, VOY...) till "Enterprise".
After Enterprise, I finally thought : "Why not watch TOS now ? But it's a bit outdated isn't it ?"
I was so wrong...everything was there : the ethics, the thrill, the mind-fuck experience, and the humor (which has indeed faded in the following series).
And now I'm answering to a post by a prominent actor of this wonderful series on Mastodon...isn't life great ? ๐Ÿ˜€

thank you for boldly going where no one has gone before and for continuing to go boldly!

I am immensely grateful to you and and the whole Star Trek Universe - to bring it to The Next Generation for a minute, "Hmmm... Well... maybe... it's worth giving up cigars for, after all." -- Samuel Clemens

#OTD #StarTrek began shaping the 7 yo grrrl I was into the #Nonbinary #AntiRacist person I've become

Each series opened new frontiers and pushed back against social straight-jackets by envisioning a future Free Of Them

That vision is still needed, perhaps more now than ever, as oligarchic autocracy spreads around the globe.

Thank you, @georgetakei , for representing that vision on #Mastodon with compassion, humor, & ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ”ฅ :better_pride:๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

Today, as always, I am honored to be named after actress Nichelle Nichols, who made history on the original Star Trek series.

Infinite diversity in infinite combinations. ๐Ÿš€

thanks for all of it! Star Trek gave me a place in my childhood where no bullies would follow because all of the ideals in Star Trek are too alien to them.

My childhood was a lonely one because I liked tech, the nerdy new computers and I got bullied a lot, hurt, attacked. Star Trek gave me hope for a better tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hard to convey how great it was for a teenager who grew up reading scifi to see it done carefully, thoughtfully, thrillingly, week after week, for three years.
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

I directly credit a childhood diet of Star Trek for making me the person I am today. I was shown that racism, sexism, hatred and corruption are inherently wrong and those messages have stayed with me.
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

Thank-you, George Takei, for your lifetime commitment not just to entertainment, but to living and practicing the โ€œFederationโ€ ideal โ€” an ideal where racism, sexism, homophobia are not welcome and where everyone, regardless of their planet of origin (except maybe Romulus) can live freely and openly! I was a 7 year old boy when Star Trek first aired. I was immediately mesmerized! You, Nemoy, Nichols, Shatner, and everyone else had a profound impact on me while growing up. Iโ€™d like to think I am a better person for what all of you taught us! Ahead warp 7, Mr. Sulu, steady as she goes!

The bridge crew/main cast included an Asian man and a Black woman. In the 1960s.

If you tried making this show today, you would have to listen to endless whining about "wokeness."

I remember pissing off my high school girl friend because I would end out date early so I got home to watch Star Trek. Now I realize I was right to go see a classic as it initially appeared. Thanks for helping make it great George.

Thank you George Takei and all the rest of the cast and crew of the USS Enterprise for imagining a future to work for.

And thank you for all your activism then,
And your continued activism today.
You are an inspiration and an example.

Im happy to say I had to pleasure of meeting you once at a convention.
I might have been 6, and I asked you how to pronounce your name.
You said "Takei, like Oh kay".
I still remember it.

Thank you so much for so many years of positive thinking. Star Trek enlightened me first when I was a child, watching it in the German TV in the 70ies. But this never stopped.
in reply to George Takei ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿฝ

Six years later, Star Trek came to German television. They called it โ€œStarship Enterpriseโ€, thought it a childrenโ€™s TV series and had it dubbed by a man who apparently barely understood English language. Some episodes have been cut distortingly because, you know: children's TV.
But one ten-year-old saw this, discovered a way to deal with his inner turmoil, and went Vulcan almost immediately.
Thank you all.

Thank you, well, โ€œfor youโ€ as well. I met you ever so briefly in an autograph line circa 1993-4 at ICON at SUNY Stony Brook in Long Island, NY. Something I especially noticed was that even in those brief moments of keeping an autograph line moving, you were incredibly gracious to the fans and tried to ask personal questions or at last a โ€œhow are you doing today?โ€ This personal touch on your behalf has stuck with me all these years later.
