I'm so glad I got off #Bluesky. Basically, the changes they rolled out about two days ago increase virality. They are essentially setting up a massive cognitohazard zone to push propaganda. They are not just using a typical ML categorization algorithm and telemetry. They are importing cliques via the Starter Pack as subgraphs. The next election is going to be fucking bad.

Fascinating. Really interested in what you can glean about their intent.

Layman here. Can you elaborate on what you mean by a "cognitohazard zone to push propaganda" ?

Also, could you say more about their use of Starter Pack cliques as subgraphs as an extension of basic machine learning classification.

I explain that here:

I am using pop culture, cyberpunk slang. I’m saying they are using memetics to influence people for political reasons.

From what I can tell, it's radical reactionary left-wing anarchist accelerationism. Full disclosure: I’m an anarchist myself.

Many #Bluesky users want to accelerate the collapse of the U.S. It mirrors right-wing accelerationism.

I'm concerned with people's health, but I don't believe the US can be saved.

@Kirus Don't forget that folks are bridging content from there to here, and then people here parrot it. So onus is on all of us to mitigate bleed over of whatever shenanigans are there through decentralizing content influence here. Example: Consider going on a #BoostDiet.

I'm aware, but #Mastodon is not designed for virality. The issue is the clusters and the closeness centrality. Misinformation spreads the fastest in highly connected networks.

For example, you and I are nowhere near the same network. We're not in a cluster.

This is a locus, but not a cluster. When this interaction is over, we won't have much contact.

They're creating a system where everyone orbits nodes with a high amount of influence.

@growfediverse They're taking this into consideration:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closenes…

It's kind of like having a few sick people randomly spread over an open space, rather than having them clustered together. Bad ideas spread like viruses. It's called memetics. #Mastodon is too open, and the people aren't clustered. Bluesky is making sure you're clustered together.

Memetic contagion alone isn't the issue. #Bluesky is creating a whole different kind of monster.

I'm not too concerned with "exposure" because #Mastodon isn't trying to make things viral. The shenanigans over there aren't culturally competitive here. And, there aren't enough vectors, and you can just cut off an entire instance.

Ironically, block lists on #Bluesky create another network of people all blocking the same person.

The blocked person is still there—you've just created a bifurcation in the system. Here, they're cut off. I'm not too concerned with Mastodon.

"They're creating a system where everyone orbits nodes with a high amount of influence."

Very cool. Starting to understand some of it. Seems a key point is they understand they can project influence by herding users into "clusters" where they are "close" to each other, and in particular to specific users (influencers) promoted by their algorithm.

These clusters, are easier to build using Starter Packs because they are in effect ready made.

Yep, pretty much. In my experience, these concepts are easier to understand if you play around with them.

This is a video that goes into how to import #Bluesky networks using #Gephi. Once you start visualizing the networks, it clicks. I know you're a layman. But, it's here if you want it:
