You might have noticed some people publish much longer posts than the usual 500 character limit. There are three ways this is possible:

-The server owner has customised their Mastodon server's software to change the character limit

-The server owner has installed a pre-customised version of Mastodon such as Glitch or Hometown

-The server isn't running on Mastodon software at all, but something totally different such as Friendica, WordPress etc

My server has a 10,500 character limit! It’s nice to have that freedom.
in reply to Fedi.Tips

I really do wish that the mainline Mastodon would allow more than 500 characters though. I understand that a limit was chosen for a reason and should exist, but it's so low it's very hard to complete a thought sometimes. The current system already does a sort of "collapse" where the bulk of the post past 500 characters is hidden until you click on those larger posts and that seems to work very well as a compromise.
in reply to Nazo

@nazokiyoubinbou As a reader, I appreciate the limit. I open Mastodon expecting a stream of short-form posts to scroll through.

if there started to be a lot more longer form posts with “read more” links, it would have a different vibe.

@markstos @nazokiyoubinbou

Yeah, this seems to be what Gargron had in mind with imposing the 500 char limit.

Even servers running Glitch etc often don't allow maximum possible character limits because the admins still want to keep posts brief.

I guess main problem is that official Mastodon doesn't let the admin (easily) choose the character limit for their own server.

in reply to Nazo

@nazokiyoubinbou

Please do tell me about this system that collapses long posts. How do I activate it and get out of having to scroll forever to get past the wordy posts?

@Nazo
in reply to Potung Thul

@potungthul It's automatically on large posts as far as I know in the mainline Mastodon ource itself at this point. If you're not seeing it it may be your instance chooses not to do it. Though your guess is as good as mine.

Unless you're defining wordy posts as anything that's bigger than you like.

in reply to Nazo

@nazokiyoubinbou @potungthul

Hey Potnung, what are you using to view Mastodon? The web? An app?

If you log in through your server's website for example, that would automatically show "read more" links on longer posts.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

I will try that out.
Currently, I am on #Fedilab, a very handy and pretty powerful app that I have grown to love, so most of the time I will still use it. But if this feature is available for most people on the web, maybe I should ask for it on this app.

@nazokiyoubinbou

in reply to Fedi.Tips

There's absolutely no limit to my character. 😊
in reply to Fedi.Tips

Every upgrade I have to edit a bunch of files to enable search, translation, and longer posts. All of this should be administrative settings.
in reply to Fedi.Tips

I will not read anything that long here and I am generally annoyed at the mastodonian diarrhea polluting my feed. If you want to write a blog, write a blog.

Cătă doesn't like this.

in reply to Z_Zed_Zed

@Z_Zed_Zed

I do (write a blog). I tried federating it, in the hopes that WordPress would do what it does on my site and truncate with a link.

But no. So now I don't even follow myself but toot a short form with a link, by hand.

Sigh.

@FediTips

@EricLawton @Z_Zed_Zed

There should be settings on WordPress that let you decide if it shows as full length or truncated or just a link? Do they not appear for you?

in reply to Eric Lawton

There are instructions here:

https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/

Are you using the plugin through an indie hosted wordpress, or are you on wordpress.com?

in reply to Fedi.Tips

@FediTips.

Not a business account, so no plug-ins.

"On the plug-in for independently hosted sites (or *wordpress.com sites with business/commerce plans*), you can choose how much of your posts are shown on Mastodon"

So that's why I don't see an option. 😥

Thanks anyway.

It would be cool if you could occasionally override the default limit when you really need to. 500 extra characters 3x/month? Ideas?
in reply to Doug Grinbergs

@Doug Grinbergs Well, by the way of how things are, you can write short posts even when you can write longer posts. But you cannot write long posts when you can only write short posts.

When I have a thought, I don't like knowing that I have to limit myself to whatever limit that provider imposes (whether you call it Twitter, X, Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky etc.) - I just can't. Yes, post threading does exist, but it just doesn't feel right. I still have to cut my message in a way that it fits some arbitrary limits that do not belong to me. So I don't get it - why does such a limit even exist? What is going to happen if I get past the 500 characters mark, even by one single character? Is the world going to end? Will I get a rare disease and go to hospital?

I don't think so.

Everyone is free to read my content, and read how much they want. If you don't/no longer want to read my content, scroll away. There's surely some more interesting stuff below mine. ☺

@msdropbear42 I've been following friendica for a month and I haven't mastered the interface yet. Do you have a clear guide or a profile like feditips to follow and discover everything about friendica i am interest thank you

the fact that any software esxists that is widely used and has a draconic post length limit is a detriment to the ecosystem as a whole though because it leads to an environment of artificially kept short posts, and worse, 🧵(1/x) threads. Mastodon's default is as a whole a detriment to everyone and "just migrating away" doesn't help - I haven't used a Mastodon server as my primary instance in over 4 years and yet I still get threads federated to me.

@msdropbear42 There's a third alternative, which is the one I decided for: stay on Mastodon for everyday stuff, and open a Friendica account just for the longer stuff. If I have something to say that goes over 500 chars, I post on Friendica and boost on Mastodon.

tl;dr: you don't have to choose one or the other - you can have both.

Friendica it offers more option and more advanced search operator and mastodon it is supposed to offer simplicity. He still have a way to do.

@MsDropbear42 [venera] 🐨♀🌈🐧🦘 great list of resources. I would also add the videos of @anubis2814. These really made me get a grasp on how Friendica works and figure out its basic functions. I managed to create a page and a group as well.

Anubis seems to be reworking on the tutorials, as there have been a lot of changes to Friendica since the original videos were made 4 years ago, but if anyone wants to see how they can join, here's an explainer:

@msdropbear42 I'm not trying to convince you of anything. You do you. I'm merely giving an alternative.

The main reason why I commented, really, was to try to convey to people that they CAN use the characteristics of the various fediverse services to their advantage without having to stick to only one. You can combine them as you see fit.

The idea that you have to use only one of the various fediverse flavors is too unfederated media, see? Too facebook, twitter. It's different here.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

@lisamelton

For those who like to know what limit an instance has, a simple powershell can do the query.
```
$site = Invoke-RestMethod “https://kolektiva.social/api/v2/instance”
$site.configuration.statuses | fl *
```
(Be sure to replace the “kolektiva.social” with your instance URI)

This was an incredibly important reason behind my instance choice, as I feel the Twitter limit thing is hugely harmful to discourse and promotes sniping over engagement. I also have a general disdain for the tl;dr crowd.

I do try to cover/mention Friendica on this account and on the website, but at the moment I'm waiting for them to finish doing their reporting system before promoting them fully. (There's currently no way of reporting posts in Friendica's interface, it's discussed here on their Github site: https://github.com/friendica/friendica/issues/8724).

Would be great if this could be implemented!

@Fedi.Tips There is already a reporting feature in Friendica, in the latest stable version (2023.12). But I'm not sure what the admin can do after reporting.
